So this is the Dick Armey I've heard about?

voodoo_pork - 2009-04-26

No, that's the Dick Army that haunts your dreams.

Some say that it's silly to presume that anti-gay people are closet gays themselves.

It's getting more and more difficult to believe that, however.

Hay Belly - 2009-04-26

So I guess it's the Left Wing Media's fault that 90% of them are Republican.

Camonk - 2009-04-26

A lot of these gay politicians seem to like bears. I wonder what that's all about.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-04-26

I'm seeing the fuck out of this.

Aelric - 2009-04-26

hmmm. I am hoping that the faces are only pixelated because it's a trailer and that will actually get to see exactly who is who in the movie. Probably not, but one can dream of the shit storm that would cause.

Space Helicopter - 2009-04-27

That's one helluva moustache ride!

Time to play Devil's Advocate:

I'm willing to bet that most of these closeted people are in the Deep South, where homophobia is at its strongest. Also, the role of the elected official is to follow the wishes of their constituents, not to be single voices in the wilderness. Thus, a person who voted in favor of anti-gay legislation does not do so out of a hatred of gay people, but rather does so because the vast majority of their constituents do.
Besides, if an elected official doesn't vote the way the constituents ask them to, they're out of a job. Thus, no money to spend on gay hookers or excuses to be away from the wife.
Also, I'm willing to bet most of these closeted gays are what you'd call "Log Cabin Republicans", as a gay guy on "Law and Order" once said: "You don't have to be straight to appreciate the sensibility of supply-side economics!".
Honestly, their only alternative would be to become Libertarian, and we all know how well THEY do in elections!

All interesting points, joelkazoo.

I counter that even though these closeted politicians vote with their constituents (which they should do, leaving the judicial system to decide whether or not it's actually prudent to do so), they also probably trumpet socially conservative values about family and religion (an assumption, but probably not far off).

Now, this is where the sticky wicket comes in. If you have a closeted homosexual politician who parrots the talking-points of the Christian media, then you have somebody that nobody on the Dem-Rep political spectrum is going to want to embrace. To the left he's a traitor and Uncle Tom, to the Right he's a liar and a homo.

I just hope the movie tackles the "why" and not so much the "who". It seems to be a pretty shitty culture when one has to outright lie about their sexual preference (about something as vanilla as gender) just to hold a public office, fight in a war, lead a pack of boy scouts, be any sort of role model whatsoever, etc.

All good points as well, toenails, all good points as well.
