sand and camels and turbans! that sure is racist!

Chibisuke - 2009-03-22

They changed "Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face" to "Where it's flat and immense, and the heat is intense".

takewithfood - 2009-03-22

So we can imagine that parrots talk, sorcery and alchemy is real, genies exist, carpets fly, and that other fictional crap holds true in this world, but ear maiming is insulting? That's just super.

chairsforcheap - 2009-03-22

it's a story that takes place in the middle ages, everyone was barbaric and chopping off parts of eachother... just because they haven't grown out of it in the middle east doesn't mean it's a racial thing

ohhhh

futurebot - 2009-03-22

Hey takewithfood, let's play a game. I'm going to present two categories, and you tell me which one "some middle eastern countries sanction penal mutilation" belongs in:

WHIMSICAL FICTIONS THAT WERE NECESSARY FOR THE PLOT OF "ALADDIN":
talking parrots
sorcery and alchemy
genies
flying carpets

ELEMENTS OF THE SETTING THAT RELATE TO THE WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE:
many middle eastern countries have deserts
many middle eastern countries have camels
many middle eastern countries have sultans

spikestoyiu - 2009-03-22

It's just one line in one song, dude.

takewithfood - 2009-03-22

Rephrase, for those who missed the point: Why can't the world of Aladdin be more thuggish and cruel as fictional element of the setting?

heyitslozeau - 2009-03-22

strange how the main character (Aladdin) looks like a Jonas brother, but is apparently Arabic, while the villain has exaggerated Arabic features.

talking about sand and camels isn't what makes the movie racist, it's the parodying of a culture.

KurtDunn - 2009-03-23

What's more interesting is that the original Arabian Night story that involved Aladdin took place in Asia-Proper. Aladdin was Chinese, and Jaffar is sometimes portrayed as an African Sorcerer.

Then again it is just a Disney Movie, not exactly high-art.

thebaronsdoctor - 2009-03-26

Guys, I think we're looking far too deeply into this whole racism thing. Especially considering the very prominent and obviously racist moments of other Disney movies.

lordyam - 2012-11-18

http://youtu.be/6ROfcDRs9mE yeah racist... fucking babies

kennydra - 2009-03-22

is there another version besides this? this is the only version i've ever seen.

You know, it's a shame Disney ruined some of their best movies with awful cartoons based on them. After watching Alladin every day after school I couldn't possibly watch this and enjoy it with all the humor having long since been driven into the ground.

pastorofmuppets - 2009-03-23

To be fair, they also ruined literary classics by turning them into cartoon movies (which all have the same plot).

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-03-22

I remember how Disney got protested by the Arab anti defamation league when the movie first came out. Disney promised to ask for their input if they did a sequel.

Disney lied, and they made sequels but never contacted those people. Disney is so awesome.

Helena Handbasket - 2009-03-22

I remember this version. I never knew they changed it.

allcaps - 2009-03-23

Yeah, thanks. I was surprised to. I saw it in England... maybe it was an American phenomenon? Racism tends to be ZING!

Seris - 2009-03-24

This isn't even their worst case of sing-song "racism".
