I actually like this one better, because it's more hilariously crass. The random honkies in a buggy. The two heaters in the bed of a buggy.

(Incidentally, the different schools or denominations of the Amish are really interesting - churches have split down the middle over how wide the brim of a man's hat should be - anything over a certain length is TOO FANCY.)

wtf japan - 2009-01-28

Did that Amish guy just flip a switch on some TECHNOLOGY?

chumbucket - 2009-01-28

yeah Amish Technology. It's the future of our economically paralyzed society.

Hooper_X - 2009-01-28

The Amish actually have a fairly complex stance on technology - most Amish, except the really really conservative groups, use things like solar power and gasoline engines. There are families who have refrigerators that run on kerosene and things like that. The prohibition on technology is less about making life more complicated as it is about keeping the corrupting influence of the outside world at bay - a refrigerator or a weed-eater isn't a problem like a telephone or a radio or a car is, because those things bring the outside world to your home or they make it easier for you to leave home and go to the outside world.

mouser - 2009-01-28

Yeah I was wondering about that. This is like kosher smoked ham or something.

wtf japan - 2009-01-28

I thought the prohibition had to do with covetousness and status symbols, but I guess the "outside influences" makes sense too.

Hooper_X - 2009-01-28

Yeah, it's a bit of all of the above, really. People's religious beliefs are amazingly complex things. Who knew?!

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-01-28

I run a chain of furniture shops, and was interested in selling these. Unfortunately, none of my phone calls and e-mails to the Amish were answered.

Hay Belly - 2009-01-28

Swing and a miss. Many ads put in local newspapers by the Amish say to let the phone ring a long time, as the phones aren't right on the property.

Um, no, because you CAN call them?

fluffy - 2009-01-28

Why do they only show the other ad on Discovery Channel? This one is much better.

Frank Rizzo - 2009-01-28

I saw a bunch of Amish tourists in DC about a year ago, teenagers. They had cell phones and digital cameras.

Just thought I would share that gem of a story.

cognitivedissonance - 2009-01-28

They were on Rumspringa. They're allowed to do that until they decide to settle down and join the community or join the outside world.

poopskin - 2009-01-28

back when I didn't have a day job, this was always on during Maury. Memories...

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2009-01-28

Does it come by horse and buggy?

seriouslyuguys - 2009-01-28

I really want one of these for my cubicle at work. I wonder if it has all the required safety features (I work in an historic building and they get really mad if we do anything that might result in burning it down).
