I see myself in the eyes of that little boy.

Robin Kestrel - 2009-01-10

Awesome present. Dad probably paid 0 for it. Wonder if he got the external floppy drive, too?

Cap'n Profan!ty - 2009-01-10

ha, when i had one, we had a cassette drive.

Stopheles - 2009-01-10

When we first got one, we didn't have a cassette drive, so I spent a few Saturday mornings typing in the coding for maze-type games, then playing them in the afternoon. It was a BIG deal when we could start saving programs onto tape.

And then, several years later when we had moved on to the Amiga (via the 64), I used old Vic-20 tapes as the basis for obnoxious industrial-noise experimentation and phone pranking.

badideasinaction - 2009-01-10

Ah, memories of games that took 15 minutes to load. And the chess game that had a setting that took 8 hours to make a move - it even said so in the instruction manual.

badideasinaction - 2009-01-10

Forgot my stars for historical contrast

gSSEhh - 2009-01-12

I feel embarrassed to point out that I rarely, if ever, beat that stupid chess game, even when it was set to make a move near-instantaneously.

Spastic Avenger - 2011-06-25

My VIC-20 came with a copy of Space Invaders. When I say 'came with a copy', I mean it came with a book containing the entire program in typed form to input into the machine EVERY TIME YOU WANTED TO PLAY IT.
It was only later i realised i could have loaded it onto a tape.

Udderdude - 2009-01-10

Awesome.

boba. - 2009-01-10

why does the mom look exactly like her boys

wtf japan - 2009-01-10

Don't want to think about the implications of THAT one.

OxygenThief - 2009-01-10

Genetics mostly.

jerrysp702 - 2009-04-26

5 stars for boba.

FeeFiFoFoTheFifeFifeBrown - 2009-01-10

Contrasting this with the Nintendo 64 Christmas kid says disturbing things about the evolution of our culture.

fluffy - 2009-01-10

Also the recent NINTENDO WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII banshees

Mike Tyson?! - 2009-01-10

I still have the picture of me when I got my NES at Christmas, I should scan it one day. I was the happiest kid.

Hooper_X - 2009-01-10

This kid sounds almost hilariously sarcastic by comparison.

Oh WOW. A VIC-20. GEE WHIZ. That's GRRRRREAT, Dad.

Billy the Poet - 2009-06-07

I'm pretty sure that we got our Appple IIc in 1983. Which means that this kid pretty well got screwed.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2009-01-10

White people christmas.

Chibisuke - 2009-01-10

Bowl Cut.

Daymage - 2009-01-10

Total family bowl cut.

The family that bowl cuts together, stays together.

nidan - 2009-01-11

I had that haircut at that time. I'm still a bit scarred

Cube - 2009-01-10

Aaaww. I just took photos of my collection of C64 cassette games yesterday. There were a couple of VIC-20 games, too. Never had a VIC myself, just C64s and a C128.

Desidiosus - 2009-01-10

I had a VIC before I got the C64. I can think of one game, Shamus, that I actually preferred on the VIC.

zatojones - 2009-01-10

I went VIC-20 to C64 to Amiga 500 and didn't get a PC until I was 19.

allcaps - 2009-01-10

His first guess is paintbrushes, his second is books, and he gets an awesome VIC-20. So what amazing things is this child doing today?

Stopheles - 2009-01-10

My thought exactly - nowadays, it would be a game console, a portable game console, or a portable music player. Virtually nothing else would do for most adolescents.

Chet - 2009-01-10

I dreamed of a vic-20 with my tandy color computer... i am old.

I am guessing their mom got an early gift of a flowbee.

boba. - 2009-01-11

i had a tandy color computer ii, which had 16k memory i think, i think the color computer i had only 12k

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2009-01-15

Yup that's how I remember it. 12k standard but could be upgraded to 16k.

My dad (who I haven't seen in 17 years) was a huge RadioShack/Tandy fanboi. He bought me and my cousin computers for Christmas. I got the Color Computer I while my cousin got a C64. Pops was thinking his boy got the better 'puter.

simon666 - 2009-01-11

Fuck the computer, how about stripes and bowl cuts!?!

Charles - 2009-09-25

eh? EH? *nudge*

Testicles of Doom - 2009-01-12

They look like a cult.

I bet the Dad is Emo Phillips.
