Uptight conservatives notoriously suck at satire so I'm going to say racist.

Blaise - 2008-12-29

Conservatives always confuse satirical with Freudian.

Cleaner82 - 2008-12-29

WATAMELON! GET MES A WATAMELON SAH! Satire, nah! I's a satiri-- sat-- a joke negro. Don't take no 'fense nah.

Lauritz Melchior - 2008-12-29

The tag says "racist" and I'm agreeing with it.

facek - 2008-12-29

google is pretty cool.

baleen - 2008-12-29

Do you read the news?

charmlessman - 2008-12-29

Super racist.

zatojones - 2008-12-29

yeah this is pretty racist

Cena_mark - 2008-12-29

This is not racist. In fact the man who popularized the term "Magical Negro" is none other than Spike Lee. A Magic Negro is just about every role Morgan Freeman has ever played. He's a black dude who comes out of nowhere and solves all of the white protagonist's problems.
The humor comes from the fact that the old guard civil rights leaders were hateful of Obama's rise to fame. Remember Jesse Jackson wanting to cut off the mans nuts? So I could imagine Al Sharpton calling Obama out as a magic negro. He had been questioning his "authenticity" throughout the primaries.

If you think this is racist, then you are racist for thinking about race too damn much.

smoothbrain - 2008-12-29

Only a racist would try to defend this as not racist, racist

Severian - 2009-01-01

Morgan Freeman, what? You are dumb.

Timothy A. Bear - 2008-12-29

LA Times article = Art exhibit on the subject of Ed Gein.

This song = Ed Gein sings for your listening pleasure.

jangbones - 2008-12-29

Racist or not, this is just not funny.

Can anyone name any successful conservative humor from the last ten years?

baleen - 2008-12-29

When jrr did that all your base belong to us thing that was funny for a few days.

Meerkat - 2008-12-29

I think the problem with conservative humor is it either needs to rely on grade 2 level humor (eg. making fun of someone's name or skin colour or clothes) or it needs to strawmanitize an issue in order to make fun of it.

I don't think there actually is "liberal" humour; if there were I'm sure it would fall into the same traps and not be funny (eg. like if Newt Gingritch were called Newt Gingrinch and coloured green and was taking christmas away from poor people or something -- not actually "funny").

Humour should be party agnostic. It is Jon Stewart's good luck that conservatives tend to say stupid things when they are resisting change for the sake of resisting change, and not because it's stupid change.

OH THE STRAWMANATEE

(yes I wrote this entire comment just to say that)

baleen - 2008-12-29

I call conservative humor "Republican Dinner Table" humor. It's usually a form of sarcasm that either cruelly or lovingly states the obvious in a fraternally mocking way. That being said, Groucho Marx was a genius, Dennis Miller is not.

Tstyle - 2008-12-29

Like Christian rock, there is no inherent reason why it should suck. I offer that it does simply because proselytizing is a higher priority than rocking.
'Conservative humor' suffers from the same mixed up priorities.

godot - 2008-12-29

Political humor works when it pokes fun at the faults, foibles, and hypocrisies of the rich and powerful. Its not necessarily a Right / Left issue, as I'm sure there was great comedy to be had at the expense of Commies in the CCCP. But in the context of the last century of American political culture, humor is inherently liberal.

baleen - 2008-12-29

The best comedy is always at the expense of those in power and with the most to lose. As soon as the right began wholeheartedly abandoning their roots and became the party of Greed is Good, they stopped being funny. Even in popular country music, which is rooted in working class conservative folks with soot beneath their nails, they've embraced a terribly boring middle class aesthetic that encourages their flock to forget just where it was they came from.

Why exactly should I be laughing at a stuffy white guy who pretends that nothing has happened since 1959?

mountain dew insimination - 2008-12-30

Five for STRAWMANATEE

DopeFiend - 2008-12-29

Surprise! The Bad Guys are acting like bad guys. 5 stars for the backlash this will earn them.

DopeFiend - 2008-12-29

I gotta add, in a perverse sort of way: after I got back from Iraq Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue", with all its retardery, made me damn proud to have served in the US Army Infantry*, in the same weird fashion that this ridiculous song makes me like Obama that much more. Hard to explain.

*esp. while drinking.

Jeff Fries - 2008-12-29

We don't know if it was made by a conservative.

baleen - 2008-12-29

Yes we do.

Hooker - 2008-12-29

Regardless of whether it's racism or not, you have to give it up for the production values.

Binro the Heretic - 2008-12-29

The singer is supposed to be impersonating Al Sharpton.

Five bucks says the singer is actually white.

Cena_mark - 2008-12-29

You guys say that conservative humor isn't funny. Its just that liberals don't have senses of humor. You're too busy being offended to know when something is funny.

And yes it is a white guy. What a white man can't impersonate a black guy with out being called racist?

baleen - 2008-12-29

Name some comedians that are conservatives and funny.
Note: I do not expect you to return to this link, because you are thoroughly embarrassed and humiliated, as you should be.

Cena_mark - 2008-12-29

I really can't name any, but one sided political humor is rarely funny. And don't tell me that you think Bill Maher is funny.

baleen - 2008-12-29

HAHAHA
Ok, that was funny! See, maybe I'm wrong.

Binro the Heretic - 2008-12-29

Cena,

I'm not saying "conservative humor isn't funny" because funny is entirely subjective.

I will, however, say this white man's impersonation of Al Sharpton is, in fact, racist.

He is apparently incapable of actually sounding like Sharpton so he belts the tune out like a white guy playing a black guy in an old minstrel show, pronouncing the "TH" sound as "D" and using a lazy drawl to sound unrefined and uneducated. The real Reverend Al Sharpton is quite articulate and a skilled orator.

This is like "poking fun" at John Stewart by portraying him as a stereotypical greedy child-killing Jew as popularized by the Nazis.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2008-12-29

Fox's The 1/2 Hour News Hour was such a resounding success, so much so, that it had to be canceled out of pity for those liberals at the Daily Show who would end up jobless and on the welfare rolls.

"ts just that liberals don't have senses of humor. You're too busy being offended to know when something is funny."

Tune out Rush for a bit and I think you might find yourself surprised.

Cena_mark - 2008-12-29

If anybody deserves mockery its Al Sharpton and Barack Hussein Obama. Al Sharpton for being a petty race pimp, and Obama, for not getting an ounce of flack from the media in his life. Its a pity that they can fly the flag of racism whenever they are threatened. And you who justify it, you are the reason why there can't be any constructive dialogue established on the issue of race.

Helena Handbasket - 2008-12-29

Who cares if this is racist, or funny, or whatever.
I'm givin' it up for Cena!

charmlessman - 2008-12-29

Cena_Mark, have you ever said anything that's rooted in reality, ever?

I'm liberal as fuck, and I'm not offended by this video. I'm not black, and it's not directed at me. I do, however, think it's tragically racist, and the creator is a hateful dick. But it's no skin off my back. It's his right to say racist hateful things.

And yes, Bill Maher is funny.

Cena_mark - 2008-12-29

harmless man, if you're not offended then why would you call the video racist? If you consider it racist, you consider it offensive.
The creator is not a hateful dick. All you know about him is that he made this song. Wouldn't you know that he's friends with Bo Snerdley, a black man who helps run the Limbaugh show. Mr. Snerdley also has the duty of the Official Obama Critisiser as having a black man criticize Obama is the only way to do so without being called racist.
All your liberalism helps you do is criticize and demonize honest parody and commentary.

Cleaner82 - 2008-12-30

After a bit of self-mutilation I see it's back to business as usual, both here on PoE and down at the ol' RNC.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-12-30

Cena_mark, I thought you were hilarious when you were cutting yourself. You should make the world laugh with you razor sharp humor...embrace your inner comedian.

baleen - 2008-12-31

Bill Maher is a libertarian, and he's not funny either.
I can name some very funny conservative comedians, they're just all dead.

Slumgullion - 2008-12-29

this is obviously quite racist. i understand this song went out on a CD that was included in RNC delegate registration packets/conference schwag bags.

Xenocide - 2008-12-29

SEE REAL BLACK MEN ARE HILARIOUS STEREOTYPES WHO TAPDANCE ALL DAY LONG.

What the hell was up with that bit at the end? 10,000 people dying isn't satire. It's slapstick.

Stopheles - 2008-12-29

Is the singer/songwriter trying to imply that black people don't live in DC? Walk a mile from the Capitol Building in any direction, dude.

glasseye - 2008-12-30

The sinking ship of the RNC is now on fire! Yay! Watch the rats try and flee, hopefully they'll all drown. While burning.

Baby Finster - 2008-12-30

Obama's not a real black man because he's educated and successful. That's 100% pure grade A USA prime racist, right there.

Knuckles - 2008-12-30

From the title I thought it would be based on Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Barack the Magic Negro
Had a very good platform
And if you ever saw it
You would know it means reform (like FDR)

All of the other party
Used to laugh and call him names (like Osama)
They never let poor Barack
Join in any... uh... something-something

Then one foggy election night
The electorate came to say
Barack with your hope so bright
Won't you guide our country tonight?

Then how the people loved him
And they shouted out with glee (yippee)
Barack the Magic Negro
You'll go down in his-tor-eee (like Fred Douglas)

KnowFuture - 2008-12-30

I see most of the prejudice in this going against non-magical people of all skin colors.

Grace Mugabe - 2008-12-30

The only funny thing here is the fact that this went way over the heads of everyone except Cena Mark.

baleen - 2009-01-18

No, the point was I think many of us "get it," but it's not funny, it's "racist." I think everyone probably did the background check on that moron's editorial from the LA Times, this is just a terrible failure at what it was trying to accomplish.

Grace Mugabe - 2009-01-24

The scare quotes make that so much more convincing.

CharlesSmith - 2009-01-01

People keep acting like something can either be racist or satire, but not both. Satire is comedy mocking society. If the aspect of society you are mocking is it's acceptance of people of different races, then what you have is racist satire.
