I couldn't think of a good comment for this so I put it into my comment generating floating point logic multi-threaded processor computer to put one here. This is what it gave me:

"seems kinda gay"

GoneGirl - 2008-12-02

So very much clay penis. The truncation of Achilles' battle with Hector is kind of a bummer.

TinManic - 2008-12-02

yeah, more of that, less gay shit.

baleen - 2008-12-02

Title should be: Achilles Fine Italian Boots.

Really I only voted this in because I wanted to know more about this fabulous lunch.

Spastic Avenger - 2008-12-02

The lunch was superb, and I found out a lot about his work on films I hadn't known he'd worked on. He was very generous with his time considering i was a lowly animation student.

I think a lot of people forget how much the Victorians edited out of what we know about Greek culture, and that's why i like this; it is also beautifully presented and animated to a degree (for a small crew) most CGI bullshitters wouldn't ever be able to reach.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-12-02

Technically its puppet penis.

And I just think the design and lighting aspects are really cool...this guy does a good job of making it look like theater.

baleen - 2008-12-02

Victorians certainly edited it out IN PUBLIC...

Tuan Jim - 2008-12-02

Uh, S.A.? What you talkin' 'bout? There ain't no gay in the Illiad. Read it yourself, Fagles is the best translation. The full on love for boys plus misogyny came a few centuries later and was centered in Athens. Look how much our culture has changed in sixty years and then remember we're talking about a period of centuries and several cultural centers and ethnicities, not only the Ionian Greeks of Athens.

This guy's take on Achilles' story is warped so far toward the homosex/misogyny end of the spectrum that it actually appears ultraviolet, when viewed with the right apparatus.

So, enjoy it as the work of a talented and crazy supergay man, but not so much as "this is what the Illiad is REALLY like before the Victorians/Puritans/Calvinists and their antisex agenda totally ruined it, man."

boba. - 2008-12-03

tj wins the fag-off

Spastic Avenger - 2008-12-05

You're quite right about the Iliad, Tuan jim. I was thinking more of the Secret Museum, etc. and the idea that Graeco-Roman 'sexual deviancy' was what bled away their poency and destroyed Ancient civilisation in the west.

That's some powerful shit to contend with, even in the contemporary arena.

Spastic Avenger - 2008-12-05

Oops, was too quck to reply; I forgot to adress your bit about temporal and geographical/ethnic variation in Greek attitudes towards Homosexuality/pederasty. I agree with you, and I certainly wouldn't commit the cardinal sin (as an anthropologist) of lumping all those varied cultural centres together.

However, as a minor point-shift, I always thought it was the Spartans who had the most extensive usage if institutionalised pederasty?

Tuan Jim - 2008-12-02

In a man's arms.

Only a man can truly please another man.
Only a man understands what a another man needs to be happy.
Only a man knows.
Only in another man's arms in his love can a man find...

paradise.

Women will take it all away.

Selfish women who speak an unknown language to a man, promise much and

take it all away.

What could a man see is such as you, O woman, even your name is a twisted mockery,

a poor imitation distorted

a curse

on the name of man.

Helen, Briseis, go! I will call a man's feelings, even that best, most beautiful of men, for you mere sport or a venal urge to power or possession.

I will not call it love.

For that is reserved for a man
and a man.

TinManic - 2008-12-02

girls smell nice and some of them squeak when you put your dick in them.

Blaise - 2008-12-02

I think everything squeaks when dicks get put in them.

Some just squeak louder.

UnderANeonHalo - 2008-12-03

Ancient Greece was gay heaven but the puritans don't want you to know! And all Europeans were vegetarian gardenarian wiccan psychics before the baptist church burned them and ate steak.

That said, this was kick ass.

Tuan Jim - 2008-12-03

Can we talk about how awesome the narrator's voice is in this?

Because it is awesome.

Spastic Avenger - 2008-12-21

It's Derek Jacobi, a famous film and TV actor mostly known for playing Cadfael.
