Yes. Hell Yes. That "small town Middle America is so much better" crap has been pissing me off for ages.

Having moved from California to Minnesota, I hear that a lot. I know it comes from the other side too, in talking about "fly-over states". But growing up in Alaska doesn't make you any better at being President than growing up in Hawaii. And people aren't "nicer" or "better" in the heartland. There's good people everywhere, and assholes everywhere.

IrishWhiskey - 2008-10-04

Oh, and throw in "states rights" along with "constitution based judges" in terms of issues people don't understand or care about, but are used solely as codewords for other culture war topics.

simon666 - 2008-10-04

Along those lines, being from California, when I go to places such as Missouri or Kansas, folks are really excited to find out where I'm from and that I live in the bay area. It's insane that people like to dog "liberal" California in some abstract sense, but don't hold those views in their personal interactions... And mostly vise versa.

Nonsense.

Former Reagan speechwriter knows how to skew issues in order to preach her own deranged political ideology. She, like the overwhelming majority involved in politico-symbolic exchange, is doing everything that Jon Stewart is talking against in this interview.

baleen - 2008-10-04

Yes. which is why I voted this out of the hopper. The idea that Peggy "Thousand Points of Light" Noonan is in any way a valuable contributor to political discourse is laughable to me.

baleen - 2008-10-04

However, I like hanging out with conservatives that aren't total fucking assholes, so it's refreshing just to be around people that tend to promote their candidates instead of calling everyone traitors, terrorists, monsters, rapists, etc.

simon666 - 2008-10-04

Huh? Those types of conservatives still exist?

baleen - 2008-10-04

What I'd call a moderate conservative still exists, but they are somewhat ashamed of what's going on. They will probably reluctantly vote McCain anyway, or be so uninspired as to not vote at all. I had a chat with a regular at my local pub who was bigtime into McCain until he chose Sarah Palin. "He's a different McCain," he said, and seemed sort of sad about it. I get that feeling from a lot of Republicans who aren't on the bible-thumping pedestal. There's a feeling that their party has abandoned them.

The Great Hippo - 2008-10-04

I'm pretty much a conservative when it comes to my ideology concerning the structure of government. I'm not an Obama-maniac and I'm certainly not thrilled about either candidate.

But to paraphrase a post I made elsewhere, I am going to vote for Obama so fucking hard that my vote will breech the membranes between parallel universes and count as a write-in for Bizarro Earth, where an evil President Gore menaces the US from his armored dirigible using his Ozone-Be-Gone ray (opposed only by a rag-tag group of green-powered technologists and scientists lead by the brilliant rogue physicist, Professor Bush).

I would have voted for McCain back when it was him versus Gore--but this McCain? Fuck no. I'm sick and tired of an administration run on empty rhetoric and fear-mongering. At least the other guy looks good in front of a camera. Fuck you, Republican party. It's going to be years until you as a party manage to dig yourself out of this grave, and you deserve every minute of it for the eight years of shit you allowed to fly.

IrishWhiskey - 2008-10-05

Here's the perfect example of this "moderate conservative" in action:
http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=42837

Its the clip where she trashes Palin as an unqualified gimmick when she thinks she's off-air, but then the very next day, publishes an editorial in the NYT praising Palin as a choice.

baleen - 2008-10-05

She's gotta feed her kids.

RockBolt - 2008-10-04

Amen to the fucking persecution complex coming from the jackasses that have run the show for nearly a decade

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-10-05

I might have to read that...thank you Daily Show Book Club!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-10-05

ps the above was dry sarcasm.

ProfessorChaos - 2008-10-05

I think i was admittedly, i had no prior knowledge of Noonan's History.
I just thought she sounded awfully "NPR". But... i guess that goes to show that impressions don't mean much.

If nothing else, Jon was right on. (as usual.)
