I think this is an underrated movie. Not a masterpiece or anything, but better than most people gave it credit for. I think the filmmakers were trying to aim for something more subversive than the usual romantic comedy bullshit Hanks and Ryan had been in, and although I don't think they succeeded very well, it's still better than the usual bullshit.
I agree. It's not particularly well done or well acted, but it's earnest. It wants to be a real romance, not like most of the hackneyed crap they produce.
I haven't seen this movie in at least 10 years, but I've always liekd it. Whatever's wrong with it, I think it pulled off the modern fairy tale feel really well. I do fear that if I rent it, it'll turn out to have always been just another Hanks/Ryan movie.
