This is the Citizen Kane of awkward fight scenes.

To this day I am convinced that DeNiro jumping on the pool table was completely improvised.

I love this scene. I also love the tiger scene.

p.s. back when Marty still made interesting movies.

Oh come on now Gangs of New York was sorta interesting (really only for the handlebar moustache on Daniel Day Lewis)

Mmmmm. Bill the Butcher. He's somewhere in my pantheon of favorite movie villains.

Yes, Gangs of New York had a good character in it played by Daniel Day Lewis, but the rest of the movie is unwatchable.

Terrible highlights:

- Fight scene in slow motion with a TECHNO FIGHT TRACK overlayed on top of it. Most people don't even remember that this happened.

- Leonardo DiCaprio as an Irish thug from Five Points. Ridiculous casting choice.

- Totally baffling and two dimensional love story. To capture the Titanic demographic, I suppose.

- The book on which this is based has some of the most awesome source material there is, and Scorsese was still not able to make a good movie out of it. The short montage where we see some of the gangs is perhaps my favorite part, because that's the only part that captures the spirit of the book. Sadly there will probably never be another movie about this ever made again. Come on, there was a gang of dandies that used to beat the shit out of people. There was a pirate queen in the East River named Nannygoat that used to bash people with her skull. How could he fuck this up?

This is a really great movie.

"Lemme give you car fare."
"All right."
"Took you a long time. Where you goin'?"
"New Jersey... (looks at cash) ... I'm goin' to Philadelphia."
