Could I talk anyone into compiling ten minutes' worth of Communist TV clips into a single YouTube video?

kelpfoot - 2008-09-01

"Communist" especially meaning "Soviet."

Cena_mark - 2008-09-01

Why do Commies need commercials. I thought it was "Shop at government store you have no other choice."

DopeFiend - 2008-09-01

How is babby formed.

Well, while Communist, Hungary was slightly less Communist (if possible) than the other countries in the bloc at the same time, to my understanding.

From roughly the late 50's/60's (after the disastrous Hungarian revolution) to the fall of the Soviet Union, Hungary lightened up a little bit in a relative sense. While still under the reins of CCCP and all, their attempts to relax and reform state policy allowed for more consumer goods (sort of like market socialism).

As for the rest of the USSR, they did have advertisements, but they more promoted generic goods or local products/factories (you can imagine). It has been argued that these ads were not so much designed to advertise anything, but to stick it to Westerners by producing what they considered ideologically superior "advertisements", emphasizing contemporary artistry and technology over actual selling.

Whether that is the case or not, these ads have aged about as well as a Trabant.

I have four DVDs worth of Hungarian television ads from this era, and more or less, they are all terrifying and thus, GREAT.

nuzzles if you have four DVDs of this why are you still posting? Get to uploading.

revdrew - 2008-09-01

And if you can't get to uploading, at least tell us where you managed to acquire them.

Yes, the Kadar era of Hungarian communism allowed for a lot more flexibility (not by our standards). This era was defined by a great freedom in film and art, commercialism, tourism and relative freedom of the press.

"Hungary's economic resources were mobilised to better satisfy consumer demand by providing a more extensive assortment of consumer goods. Some economic reform measures were introduced to integrate limited market mechanisms into the framework of the planned socialist economy. An unfortunate result of this policy were rising economic stresses and high indebtedness which became evident by the late 1980s. Yet these economic crises were prevalent throughout the collapsing communist world. Hungary’s mild diversity left it slightly better equipped."

I can't stop watching this. It's fantastic. I'm going to loop it and set my alarm sound to it so I can wake up to it in the morning.

Gwago - 2008-09-01

This is awesome. Even their jingles are bleak!

Desidiosus - 2008-09-01

Yes, but also beautiful and haunting, like Goth chicks.

:D

Goethe and ernie - 2008-09-01

It does certainly sum up the useless repetition of consumerism - that's "I go in/I come out" that he's singing at the start.

I just know that ventrilo harassment guy could work wonders with this clip.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-09-01

Skala Coop: We sell horseshoe magnets, and that's it.

CuteLucca - 2008-09-01

Any country that plays depressing synthesized techno over a grocery store commercial is OK by me.
