Displacements, an art installation by Michael Naimark.

A rotating camera was used to film the room and its inhabitants. Then the room and its contents (not the people, obviously) were painted white. A projector placed at the camera's location plays back the scene for a weird augmented-reality effect.

DUUUDE I WAS SO WASTED

STEP 2) Some braindead executive in some blowjob corporation sees this and says "FUCK THAT'S THE COOLEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN I NEED THAT TO SELL MY PRODUCT OR SERVICE."

STEP 3) Idiotic advertising agency spends millions to produce commercials that look just like this for whatever product or service from step 2.

STEP 4) We the viewer are stuck seeing endless repetitions of this effect to sell some crap for three months or so, long after the novelty has worn off.

STEP 5) Repeat

http://www.naimark.net/projects/displacements.html:

"Displacements was produced three times between 1980 and 1984. By the third time, at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1984, it was done."

It's been around for a while and I've only seen it copied once. My fellow white people know who I mean.
