I still want to have sex with Jane. There I said it.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-06-17

I want to have sex with Jane, Daria, and Misato Katuragi at the same time.

Cap'n Profan!ty - 2008-06-17

perhaps you can throw them a party

FABIO2 - 2008-06-17

It's like Beavis & Butthead for goths who'd rather feel smug than laugh.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-06-17

Which typically would mean you'd fivestar yourself for the irony of the statement, smartass.

Hodge - 2008-06-17

In honesty he isn't too far off.

CornOnTheCabre - 2008-06-17

So this show would fall under awkward, forced smugs?

I'd actually really like to see one of those... I bet Robin Leach could pull it off.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-06-17

Sometimes I remember that there were a couple of things about the 90's I actually enjoyed.

Then I quickly forget again.

Camonk - 2008-06-17

Why was Daria one of those things? Show was so aggressively mediocre and without bite it may as well have been pictures of babies to get my grandma to watch MTV. Daria was a flabbergasting disappointment.

Innocent Bystander - 2008-06-17

I dunno, I just felt it was very understated and kinda drew the humor from the mundanity of everything.

Seriously, compare Daria to Downtown, a later MTV animation thing which ditched all things Daria and went straight to XTREEM KOOLNESS! Now that show sucked.

Cheese - 2008-06-17

Downtown was a much more interesting show, but Daria's pretty decent, too. I don't see how DT was Xtreme, it was about a D&D playing nerd living on his own in New York. 99% of the stuff that happened in it was based on real life people, while Daria was a much more standard operation.

DT also had much better animation.

And I worked on it (I worked on Daria too, but very briefly) so it's better just for that.

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2008-06-17

I liked it in its day, but my friends didn't.

Now I see why they hated it. It really is dire, dilute, Beavis and Butthead era crap that misses the point.

Dumb Lamer - 2008-06-17

Daria sucked the moment I saw Ghost World.

dead_cat - 2008-06-18

Daria was annoying, but the other characters in the series were entertaining enough; I have mixed feelings about the show itself.
It had its moments at the time, but anymore is pretty much relegated to the realm of nostalgia and embarrassment.

Aelric - 2008-06-17

i never liked this show much, but goddamn, for some reason it makes me nostalgic for the 90's. seriously, why'd they have to end?

Mike Tyson?! - 2008-06-17

We got the Sega Dreamcast and it was a star that burned too bright for our world. It marked the end of the 90s as we knew it.

cognitivedissonance - 2008-06-17

I'm gay, but if I ever met a woman like Daria, I'd be hetero lickety-split.

Hodge - 2008-06-17

I don't get why some people are actually attracted to someone as unlikeable as Daria. At very best she is a pretentious and sarcastic bitch that needs a good ass kicking from her parents.

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2008-06-17

She's a dour, plain, lesbian that thinks she's well-read, but in fact smells a bit and has intentionally controversial opinions.

Imagine a less-fat faerie queen from Poe-Red and you're probably there. I imagine her friend has a Deviant Art account and paints atrocious modern art in violent colors, or more likely, neon furries.

All I can say is that if this your style of freak, you have a bad taste in freaks. Also, I suspect that you have bad taste in women. Was your mum a weird dry bitch, too?

cognitivedissonance - 2008-06-17

I'm gay.

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2008-06-17

You might get better. Hang in there, tough guy.

Besides, why can't a man whom likes men also know which women are best? I can uh certainly pick the most eligible bachelors from a crowd.

Anyway, I'm just being a douche. Ignore me.

Lindner - 2008-06-17

Oddly enough, I remember that the series got WORSE as it went on, as series tend to do. Just considering where this one began, I'm surprised to find it COULD delve deeper into the shit.

They focused less on the girls smug self assurance that being different at all costs is some sort of social high road, and focused more on their young supple bodies ripening with puberty as hormones began to take their toll on their fragile teenage mental state.

In essense it was less snark and more melodrama.

Snarky melodrama, as it were.

dead_cat - 2008-06-18

"I imagine her friend has a Deviant Art account and paints atrocious modern art in violent colors, or more likely, neon furries."

DIE, HERETIC!

metalgazebo - 2008-06-17

Somone once told me they didn't like Daria because she wasn't properly submissive as a woman should be.

I was never quite sure how to respond to that.

minimalist - 2008-06-17

God I hated this show. The strawman "jock and cheerleader" antagonists. The stone-faced, half-lidded delivery of unclever, superior snark that inspired crap like Juno or Gilmore Girls, AND a slew of shitty webomics.

Some decent lines now and again, but the smugness, oh, the smugness. Yes, tubby basement-dwelling goth girl, your life is so much richer than that cheerleader's.

Hodge - 2008-06-17

Heh, can't really disagree with what you said here, still for some strange reasons I can't really bring myself to hating Daria.

panipuri - 2008-06-17

i totally agree. But since I was a girl in middle school when this show was around I thought it was so different and relatable that I can't help but like it for nostalgia's sake

Flux - 2008-06-17

yes

and it suffers all the more in contrast to beavis and butthead, which was great, almost brilliant

but it would be more accurate to say that show is the source of all of the parts of Juno that suck, not the movie as a whole

DMKA - 2008-06-17

Ehhh...Daria was the show on MTV for the people who claimed to have hated MTV. Or anything remotely mainstream. Which was a really popular trend when I was in 8th/9th/10th grade.

It was enjoyable once in a blue moon.

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2008-06-17

Super Protip: If a diabetic - or any person - faints due to hypoglycemia you should give them a free chocolate bar, not make them pay for it.

So, one smug-ass show and it's got its facts wrong.

I feel no problem in calling this crap.

Frank Rizzo - 2008-06-17

diarrhea cha cha cha, diarrhea cha cha cha
