Belloq was a great bad guy.

Species - 2008-06-16

Are you kidding? That Nazi major Toht was way creepier.

Syd Midnight - 2008-06-16

As an adult, I appreciate the slick coolness of Belloq. But as a kid, it was trenchcoat Nazi who scared the shit out of me, all walking up to you with a red hot poker, quivering in excitement.

Wiki: "Spielberg wanted Toht to be a cyborg, with a metal arm that could transform into a flamethrower and machine gun. The 1979 script gave him a light in place of a right eye. Lucas rejected these as too far-fetched." Okay, that almost makes up for "Phantom Menace".

FABIO2 - 2008-06-17

Seriously? I would think that insanity would be Lucas' idea.

Belloq is great. In a world of famous explorer archaeologist rockstars, he's cut form the same cloth as a rival rocker, but isn't afraid to sell his soul for stardom.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-06-16

I swear, the Ark makes the best movie sound effect ever, all like, [WWWWORRRRRB... WWWWORRRRRB...]

Also: that really superbad bad guy in the trenchcoat and hat needs his own tag. R.I.P, screaming melty-face glasses guy, we hardly knew ye.

zatojones - 2008-06-16

That's the sound of God getting pissed off

chairsforcheap - 2008-06-16

yeah, where is the "what hell sounds like " tag?

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-06-16

CHAIRSFORCHEAP HAS A GOOD IDEA! TAKE A PICTURE WHILE IT LASTS!

Haha, naw man I'm just joshin' ya, you're cool. There's enough room for that tag though, and this is kind of a funny place to put it, true

Where Is U @, Hodge?

Hodge - 2008-06-17

Done, now leave me the hell alone you freaks.

HURF BLURF DUH - 2008-06-16

The other Nazi guy (not trenchcoat guy) was totally nondescript and ordinary until this scene, then his face transforms into some kind of reptilian horror. I swear, the entire screen test for that role must have been "show us your creepiest face" and that guy won.

Angel Carver - 2008-06-16

Great scene, but I'm sorry "Raiders" definitely comes in second place behind "Temple of Doom." That movie's continuing reputation for inferiority is the best evidence I have that people don't trust their own responses to movies.
It is clearly the fastest, funnest, least pretentious and most enjoyable movie of the bunch.

Now I must close my eyes and keep them closed or face the face-melting rage of the "Raiders"-loyalist Aintitcool wraiths.

erratic - 2008-06-16

kali-ma shutee dei. kali-ma, KALI-MAAA!

GuyCorngood - 2008-06-16

Temple of Doom is great but it doesn't have YHWH melting nazis. The internerd hive mind is correct in this case.

StanleyPain - 2008-06-16

I don't know if I'd put it behind Temple, but I too am also a fan of Temple and do not understand the hate for it. And yeah, definitely least pretentious and, in my opinion, probably the most accurate to the pulp serial origins/ideas that Lucas/Spielberg wanted to do in the first place.

But, yeah, great scene except for the wincingly bad miniature they used for the burning of all the nazi soldiers.

drcrypt - 2008-06-16

I want to second this: Temple has always been my guilty favorite as well, since it was the only one that truly embraced the pulp stories that inspired the series. Raiders is technically a better movie, but Temple is just a roller-coaster ride of fantastic ideas... from the very first minute, it just never gives up, and the opening scene in Hong Kong is simply brilliant. Most people just can't see past Short Round and Spielberg's wife, though, even though they're both perfectly fine.

B. Weed - 2008-06-17

I'd probably like Temple better if Kate Capshaw's character either died very early in the film or at least spent most of it bound and gagged. She was seriously goddamn irritating (not that Short Round was much better).

FABIO2 - 2008-06-17

The reason she never bugged me is because Indy did the correct thing and spent the entire movie telling her to shut up.

Mad Struggle - 2008-06-16

Six year old me shat a pile of bricks at this scene.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-06-16

Oh, how did I forget to not click the goddamn favorite box? [TF2 Scout]: "STUPID STUPID STUPID!"

I am now going out to buy John Williams CDs and a used DVD of Falling Down. Because I can.

FABIO2 - 2008-06-17

I first watched Raiders when I was 6, then again and again when we got it on VHS. But it wasn't until I was 9 when I could actually watch this scene instead of fast forwarding.

FABIO2 - 2008-06-17

The best scene was the opening, by the way.

poopskin - 2008-06-19

I basically had the same experience as you, but replace 'fast forwarding' with 'rewinding over and over.'

Repomancer - 2008-06-17

1) The best scene was the opening, though this one is right up there.

2) Raiders is superior to Temple of Doom in every possible way.

That is all.

OgreMkIV - 2008-06-20

Raiders was cool, yes, but Temple is pretty freakin' sweet.

You have obviously never filled a room with candles and incense and fog from dry ice, blasted the creepy Kali worship music, and then invited your next door neighbors over for a party. They all come through the door with a WTF? face, worried they're gonna get their hearts ripped out. Sweet.
