Why were there so many cartoons insistent on forcing the 1950's onto their viewers? The 1950's sucked!

I hated this fucking cartoon so much when I was little.
It always bothered me that the video game didn't have the little slippery things Q-Bert could shoot from his nose. Those should have been a bonus pick-up or something.
Ow. That one really hurt. Why are the snakes such dicks? Why did the lady snake try to talk like Mae West or whatever? Why is anyone friends with any of the secondary characters? They're all awful!
I expect giant balls of snot to erupt at any moment. I find this distubing, but disappointed that it doesn't happen.
