I wonder how long it'll take for this application of technology to finally pay for itself.

In japan, about two weeks.

Also note similar systems already exists for cars and large-scale backup/retrieval systems. A local video library here in Montreal also use a similar system for on-demand on-site DVD/laser disk access. These system are all the same. Only the medium change.

Parking bikes is pretty terrifying

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-04-26

Even something as mundane as bike parking can be enhanced through the use of a giant underground base.

ProfessorChaos - 2008-04-26

I'd be more impressed if this system could park my Gundam.

Dammit Japan...

glasseye - 2008-04-26

It's like a giant tape robot... but for bikes!

DerangedGoblin - 2008-04-26

It's... beautiful.

In Wolfsburg, Germany, there is a Volkswagen plant with two massive towers like this that are full of Volkswagens.

Cube - 2008-04-26

Not knowing Japanese, I'd say this is a report of the devastating bike shortage in Japan -- they only have this one bike good enough to fill the whole parking space.

The bikes outside... Not good enough.

UnderANeonHalo - 2008-04-26

My God, it's full of bikes...

The idea kind of falls apart if there's only a few of these stations in the city, but I approve anyway.

Spastic Avenger - 2009-03-26

I like the way the machine first eats the bike like a moray eel coming out of its hole.
