Protip: People and jet fuel don't mix.

I learned that from the Rocketeer.

This is one of the most tragically depressing accidents I've ever heard about.

Stopheles - 2008-02-19

How many other airline disasters have there been that took the lives of 583 people, and why is this one worse than those ones?

Jimmy Labatt - 2008-02-19

Apparently, it had the highest number of fatalities (excluding ground fatalities) in aviation history.

Yes, but this is referred to in the description as "the worst airline disaster that took the lives of 583 people," which implies that there were other, less bad airline disasters that took the same amount of people.

Never mind.

The clip itself is pretty damned overwhelming in its sadness.

Good find

Way to go, pilot.

StanleyPain - 2008-02-19

What I've always found interesting about this disaster is that it was only possible through a long series of events that led up to it that were so precise and, in some cases, small. had any of the pilot errors made in the last few minutes either not happened at all or happened a few seconds earlier or later, the accident may have never happened. The weirdest of which being the fact that the tower transmission telling the one plane not to taxi yet was garbled because the pilot transmitted that he was going at the EXACT, precise same time as the tower. Read up on the whole thing and it's pretty creepy.
