HOLY SHIT, something like Guitar Hero, only with a REAL guitar...even MY VERY OWN candy-red Strat (which is like, the Ford Escort of electric guitars---Chuck Berry and Elvis Costello's favorite and Jonathan Richman wrote a whole goddamn song about that particular model, etc.)??

This is exactly the thing put in place that was missing from Guitar Hero and what kept me from playing it much...I mean sure it's fun, but IMO knowledge of a real guitar works against you when you play Guitar Hero.

Surely I am asking the impossible when I ask if a wah pedal or fuzz box or an Echoplex made from an old reel-to-reel tape recorder will work with this game.

I'd almost say I'd have more fun making insane noise that terrifies neighbors within a 2 block radius with my crappy little (though somewhat tweaked) amp and the above mentioned implements than with some game that tries to get you to play certain songs but this game is definitely a step in the right direction, or something.

Ford Escort? What the hell are you talking about? The Ford Escort is a genre defining vehicle that has set aesthetic trends for over 1/2 a century and become a design icon? It is one of the predominant choices for professional race-car drivers?

Worst analogy ever.

KnowFuture - 2008-02-08

OK---you provide a better one.

ProfessorChaos - 2008-02-08

The Fender strat IS a genre defining instrument that has set aesthetic trends for over 1/2 a century and become a design icon. It is one of the predominant choices for professional musicians.

The Analogy Stands.

EvilHomer - 2008-02-08

I think he's saying the FORD isn't genre defining. It's a popular car, but it's more like a Squire or a Gibson- cheap crap for rednecks and poor people.

ebola - 2008-02-08

Even if you HAD to use a ford car analogy you could have said... shit, a Ford f150? It has been the best-selling vehicle in the United States for 23 years and the best-selling truck for 30 years. It is not super fancy but well made and relatively expensive. People use it for work and pleasure and it has a reputation for quality but few bells and whistles.

The ford Escort is a piece of shit. EvilHomer is right.

Disclaimer: I own a 1994 American Fender Strat, in red. It's a wicked guitar.

jmags - 2008-02-08

Elvis has played many guitars, but THE iconic one is a Jazzmaster, not a Strat.

Rovin - 2008-02-08

Since when was Gibson cheap crap?

EvilHomer - 2008-02-08

Since 1952.

Rovin - 2008-02-08

Er, okay, I'll tell my sturdy-as-hell '90 SG that.

Doctor Arcane - 2008-02-08

Nice.. buut... as someone pointed out in the youtube comments wtf are they using the Guitar Hero format, why not use tabs/actual music? Hopefully there's a mode you can switch on or something.

If this is real, I'm not quite convinced. I had thought about trying to jury rig something like this, but then realized that a MIDI controller for a guitar is like 0-1000.

Billie_J_Buttfuck - 2008-02-08

'Cause it's a video game?

Really, a game full of nothing but tabs is boring. I like the idea of optional tabs after you beat a song, so you actually know what the hell the proper notation of the song would be.

fluffy - 2008-02-08

It looks like it's just doing one note at a time (which is really easy to do, unlike a full chord), and just using a USB audio adaptor (which is really cheap, and is what's inside, say, the Rock Band mic).

Doctor Arcane - 2008-02-09

A non n00b mode for people who want to actually practice guitar would be nice. I mean right now I basically play to mp3s or Guitar Pro a lot, it would be nice if something could tell me 'dude you're a beat behind' 'your chord was epic fail'.

EvilHomer - 2008-02-08

Four stars because, while this is a really awesome idea (trick kids into learning something useful while playing their video games, and finally end the Guitar Hero vs Guitar Player wars), I'm still not sure how it's supposed to work. What are the colored blips meant to represent? Chords? Fret patterns? And the current music choice looks awful.

ebola - 2008-02-08

Yeah seems like they could have used tab or something. You could scroll tab like that and I don't think it would be much harder to learn after a while.

Maybe it's easier to get people interested if it looks like something they already like (GH).

ebola - 2008-02-08

That looks pretty rad but yeah... dunno how they're gonna make a midi controller for it.

Billie_Joe_Buttfuck - 2008-02-08

This is exactly what I wanted. I loved the idea of guitar hero, but... I dunno, I just felt like a fucking five year old with that controller.

This makes me completely happy.

numb - 2008-02-08

I want that.

Also, riceknbacker roolz, fender droolz!

KnowFuture - 2008-02-08

THATS WHAT I WAS TRYIN TO SAY!

Adramelech - 2008-02-08

Uh, good job completely missing the point of rhythm games there, guys. They were never, ever, ever meant to simulate or teach anything resembling real instrument playing. Guitar Hero is to guitar playing what Parappa is to rapping. These are games of rhythm and speed played for recreation, testing your ability to keep a musical beat on colored buttons and dance pads.

This shit makes about as much sense as a rip-off of Call of Duty that uses a REAL ASSAULT RIFLE for a controller.

fluffy - 2008-02-08

I don't think this is trying to be a rhythm game, it's trying to be a "learn to play guitar" game. It's well aware of the difference, and I would definitely like to play it so I can get better at guitar.
