The current crop of Republicans hardly stand for the party ideals pre-1980. Even if you say Reagan was a good President (I do mostly), it's been waaay downhill since then. To the GOP, conservatism only relates to white males retaining power and lining their own pockets by means of controlling the uneducated masses (read: rednecks) with religious fear mongering.

I am a registered Republican, but sure as shit haven't voted that way in years. You can't possibly think W has done anything less than an epically bad job. He is directly responsible for the fact that the dollar is worth half a Euro, and he started his first term with a budget surplus and a wicked strong economy. He also got us into two wars; one he seems to have forgotten about (even though it was a just response to 911) which we haven't even won it yet, and another that is going to take us generations to get out of safely (or we can bail in a matter of years and leave them to kill each other, but then deal with them in 10 years when they are Iran II: Electric Boogaloo). He is bankrupting this country and our children are going to suffer for it. Like, really suffer.

I am also really glad to see how fragmented and fucked up the party is. Most Reps hate McCain, and consider him barely more right-winged than of Hillary, but he's winning the nomination. Since he only seems to win the big states that usually go to the Dems anyway, Hillary or Obama will be our next President, as soon as they sort out who gets the nod. Maybe in 4 years we'll be back where we were in 1980, after Carter did a nothing job and the next Great Communicator rises to the top.
