I was at his first East-Coast show in 32 years (this was in late 93, I believe, about three years before this performance) and he gave me his email address. It was a few years before I got email access regularly, and I will always kick myself for not being a penpal with Dick Dale after he made the offer.
I wish "Surf Beat" was as well known as "Miserlou" -- he'd make more songwriting money off of its success, and it's an absolute stomper.

What the hell? This dude is old! You can't rock if you're old! I mean... surf. Or, um, shut up.

I just love Miserlou. But then, I'm a total freak for vintage surf rock.

Stopheles - 2008-01-14 If you don't have a copy of "Surf Legends and Rumors," GET ONE IMMEDIATELY. It's the best surf comp I've ever heard, and makes a strong case for the concept that not every surf band played the much-easier Ventures/Chantays style...

"Dick Dale's hands are so strong he could play the Golden Gate Bridge like a harp."

It must be tough for his grandkids, what with grandpa being on the scalpel-sharp volcanic summit of Mt Fucking Awesome and all.

Dick Dale is a god among men.

Not even a shitty sample-track by the Black-Eyed Peas can defeat this song.
