Yup, and that's terrible. There are a few cities / regions bucking that trend, but huge swaths of the country remain mired in that backwards bootlicking corporatist mindset.
I would have to drive 20 minutes to get to the nearest bus stop.
And there's no place to park my vehicle safely once I'm there.
We need passenger rail stations out in our rural areas with safe parking so lower-income residents can be carried to the urban centers and catch a bus to work.
But that suggestion infuriates middle-class people who are already upset at the chickenfeed being tossed at our current piss-poor public transit system.
I'm lucky enough to own my home, but most of my neighbors are low-income households living paycheck-to-paycheck and paying way too much rent for shitty crumbling homes.
I spend roughly $45 on gas every week just to get to & from work. There's wear & tear on my vehicle every day. Once I'm at work, it sits baking in the middle of a huge shadeless parking lot. I would love to leave it sitting at home and only have to take it out for private use.
I used to have an 80 minute commute from Surrey to North Vancouver. Most of the commute was on the SkyTrain. You see some crazy stuff on there.
One incident that comes to mind involves a bridge over the Fraser River. It was the middle of winter and the train was going over the bridge and I noticed that all of the passengers seemed to be looking at me. I quickly realized they were looking past me and I turned around and saw a man hanging onto the outside end of the train. He was wearing the filthiest T-shirt I have ever seen and the wind and freezing rain was battering him as he hung onto the small outer edge of the train for dear life.
Thankfully he did make it across. The train cops grabbed him on the other end and no doubt gave him a light to medium hassling.
