I think it's just a publicity stunt from a kind of unhinged rival self diving car software developer.

Not to defend Tesla here, but I do think that it's important to keep in mind that self-driving cars don't need to be totally safe, they just need to be safer than human drivers. It's kind of a low bar.

Of course, how we are going to deal with the economic fallout of putting professional drivers out of work and why we don't just invest in public transit are more important questions than safety.
