There's no way this is not a dupe but I still love it

It sucks, but as long as there is scarcity and finite resources the powerful will always lord over everyone else.

That's why all these extremes that people come up with that are the cat's pajamas and are the best economic solutions ever usually end up in the form of an armed revolt that instead of making anything better, keeps everyone else who isn't in power in abject misery while one set of problems is just traded for another.

Ever notice that in The Orville and Star Trek the only reason everyone -mostly- gets along is because it's impossible to be greedy when technology can provide for everyone. But so far every idea for forced equality has failed because resources are still extremely finite, and greed is still a thing, and sadly sometimes greed is the only motivation for some to improve any aspect of anyone else's lives whatsoever.

This is why I laugh at communism even though I'm a market socialist. This is also why I can't stand libertarians because they think that this greed and scarcity always leads to 'good', which it time and time again leads to a lot of problems. This is also why I laugh at anyone who thinks all revolutions were somehow good, or somehow fondly look back at the Cuban or Russian revolution as if everything was suddenly better and everything was suddenly fixed, when it wasn't. Arguably, the American revolution as well had a lot of problems that were basically kicked down the field in hopes that people would solve them later on - only we really didn't because greed and scarcity.

The human race isn't going to find magic salvation from aliens or religion either. We are going to have to come together as one race at some point, put on our big pants, and realize that until technology can provide for all (which at this point it can't) we are going to have to give up a lot of things in order for people to manage.

At this time, I'm not seeing a lot of rich progressives or even middle class progressives willing to give up their high standards of living in order for things to be more equitable. And, even the ones barely scraping by on minimum wage are going to have to give up things so that the poorest in the world can get by. I'm not so sure I am willing to give up the life I've grown accustomed to or the food I enjoy either. I don't know of any other progressive who is willing to do that either - and many won't admit this and that is also a problem.

TL;DR, I think we've got another 500-1000 years ahead of us and the great filter is still ahead of us to. I think eventually we may be able to scrape by, but I'm pretty sure our idealist economic pipe dreams today are likely not going to be the solution going forward.

It's hard to sell the idea of "your standard of living has to come down" on the campaign trail (I tried in 2015 btw). With our current technology I think we *could* provide everyone with reasonable material comfort and basic stuff like education, health care, transportation, etc, but not at the level that middle-class people enjoy in the US, Canada, and Europe. Ask me again when the populaton re-doubles itself.

I can’t prove or quantify it but I believe there is enough resources and productivity to give the current human population a decent standard of living, only with a reduced consumption of meat and obviously we can’t have everyone driving 4 ton SUVs.

capitalism is better than feudalism but is clearly on the way out

it took over 200 years for capitalism to replace feudalism

also, no guarantee that what replaces capitalism will be an improvement, it could be worse
