Or maybe we could have a negotiated settlement where Russia's security concerns are addressed and the areas that want to be part of Russia get to be? And we don't send $40 Billon dollars to escalate a pointless, horrible war, and Ukrainians stop getting killed?

But this isn't just a situation of "Russia is doing evil because Putin is a BAD MAN who HATES FREEDOM". Russia is doing this because of their understandable security concerns. A negotiated settlement that recognizes this is the only way to end the human misery of the war. Understanding this isn't defending Putin, it's just not being childlike about geopolitics.

He's just a guy doing things for understandable, coherent reasons rather than a cartoon satan. Recognizing that isn't the same as endorsing 9/11. 9/11 is still bad.
Americans, even nice liberals, are real willing to believe that foreigners are sinister caricatures. (cf. China) It's weird and gross, but honestly I can't blame people too much based on what the media coverage is like.
