just finished it, it's alright. Not quite as good as hyped, rather padded, but not bad.

I'm kind of burnt out on allegories where poor people fight each other to the death for the amusement of rich assholes.

Mostly because we don't need an allegory for things happening all around us.

SO I'm probably not going to watch this, ever.

In America, the poor people have rich assholes fight each other for their amusement.

It’s called professional sports.

He was a factory worker, and the company fired half the employees in one day. The union organized a big strike and strike breaker cops were sent in to ruthlessly crush them whereupon they killed one of his mates.

I'm assuming after that he couldn't find work and spiralled downwards into drinking / gambling etc. He also seems to suffer from PTSD from the strike and witnessing his mate being killed.

It's a pretty well supported fact that impoverished people make bad decisions. eg. instead of acting like some kind of ultra-logical robot, living on turnips and saving every penny, they will instead blow any money they have on frivolities like cinema tickets, trendy clothes, cigarettes, booze, sweets etc.
This is partly a reasonable response, in order to have some joy in their shit lives, but also apparently, being impoverished does actually impede peoples judgement in certain ways.

Also, in the real world, blaming poor people for being poor is a dumbass opinion thats not supported by the data.
