To get more followers. Not exactly a secret.

Mister Yuck - 2021-07-23

Eh, I don't really buy this argument at all. The number of women trapped in the church by unwanted pregnancies can't be very high. I think the real motivation is that it separates the world into "us" and "them", and makes "them" literal baby-murderers. What lengths would you go to to stop mass-baby-murderers? Would you give money to the opposition? Vote their supporters into office? Attend weekly meetings, go out into the street and protest? Set off some bombs? The abortion issue mobilized American christians into a demographic you could easily exploit for course or money, even more than they already were

That's exactly it. Ideologues require powerful villains to exist in order to justify their own extremism and to attract followers.

It's not enough to live and let live; it's not enough to agree to disagree. If you're going to attract masses to your dogma, you need to build up a moral boogeyman who can simultaneously be laughably pathetic and oppressively powerful, depending on the rhetorical needs of the moment.

Invite people to your temple who are looking for an opportunity to fall into lock-step with a moral authority that's simmering with pent-up violence towards people who are different. Cast a wide enough net and you'll catch many, many followers. But none at all if you don't take time to create that boogeyman.

"The number of women trapped by unwanted pregnancies can't be that high."

wow. Didn't expect to see a comment more evil than the video.

SolRo - 2021-07-23

Religious teachings are all about fight between good and evil. And while reading old stories is nice it’s not nearly as engaging as going out group-LARPing as the holy saviors of babies, fighting the demonic abortionists!

Except ‘magic missile’ are bricks or molotovs

casualcollapse - 2021-07-23

Are you fucking joking, I was going to drag you for that comment you said about unwanted pregnancies but I see it's been taken care of. But holy shit man do not know how many single mothers there are in this world. Have you not seen the predatory billboards saying "pregnant? need help?" and it just redirects to a fucking Church

""The number of women trapped by unwanted pregnancies can't be that high."

wow. Didn't expect to see a comment more evil than the video."

You're really taking that in a weird way. I'm saying it's not high enough to motivate cynical religious figures into using unterminated pregnancies as a recruitment tool. I'm not saying that I don't give a shit about those mothers that were trapped that way.

How many women have ever had their future hopes dashed and made desperate due to an unwanted pregnancy?

Perhaps as many as 20!

Hazelnut - 2021-07-26

Cue Nominal deliberately misquoting Mister Yuck for the next three years, repeating his smarmy bit of sarcasm like it's some kind of crushing killer argument.

Just to throw out an idea, when someone says something that can be misconstrued as foolish, maybe the thing to do is invest a few seconds into hearing what they're trying to say, say their perspective, meet them where they are, then help them become more informed?

Ah, what am I saying. Way more self-satisfying to condemn out of context, right?
