Education needs to get back to basics.

exy - 2020-10-24

Get in close, kids, you won't want to miss this.

jfcaron_ca - 2020-10-24

We can't teach kids about sex or homosexuality, it would confuse and scare them!

Jesus, fuck. Imagine having to stand there in dread with a noose around your neck for 2 minutes waiting for the floor to fall from underneath you.

You know... In other countries a terminally ill person just drinks from a sippy cup and they nod off to sleep forever. That's how little it actually takes to kill somebody peacefully. Let's not kid ourselves. The pretext of executions is done to inflict as much maximum trauma onto the recipient as possible. There's far more humane ways to off somebody but who wants THAT?! The idea is to make the son of a bitch suffer. We can say all we want how 'humane' modern executions are but subconsciously at least we know that sure as shit it's made brutal on purpose to sate 'punishment boners'. If they didn't suffer where would the catharsis be? The pain and fear is supposed to be like society's final 'fuck you' to the accused on the way to oblivion.

In other words executions exist to masturbate public's base desires for revenge and nothing more. And should not be a thing.

Oklahoma now makes inert gas asphyxia an option. And that's just passing out in a state of euphoria. Any welder's canister of nitrogen will do do. No more traumatic that the occasional lab technician who passes out and dies transporting flasks of liquid nitrogen in elevators.

I understand the concern that a placid end may make execution too acceptable in society. I'll never relate to the the death penalty proponents that oppose inert gas asphyxia because it isn't traumatic enough.

jfcaron_ca - 2020-10-25

I don't think that's true for 20th century American/European execution techniques, I think the goal there was to alleviate the guilt of the executioner. E.g. the firing squads where half of the guns had blanks, so no one would know who actually killed the guy. I dunno how that jivves with getting into heaven or hell but it seems to work for the guilt part (also see: drone warfare).

Also I think terminally ill people are likely easier to finish off than healthy murderers, so maybe a bigger cup is needed .

badideasinaction - 2020-10-25

It’s a whole lot of people intent on revenge and making the person suffer while pretending otherwise.

States don’t use other ways like inert gasses because the person might feel something resembling pleasure. Like why they don’t just OD the guy on fentanyl.

Admit you’re okay with killing people and want them to feel terror before they die or stop doing it, simple as that.

themilkshark - 2020-10-25

Look at how all the women and girls treat execution: they're entertained by it. The adult exclaims he's dead so that it's clear to the kids that something exciting and fascinating happened. The instructor has a weird sense of pride and satisfaction talking about killing.

Normal people are horrible. Makes democracy seem kind of insane.

ashtar. - 2020-10-26

Once you get through all the bullshit about crime deterrence and saving money that we've known to be empirically false since forever, support for capital punishment really does just come down to revenge boners. At the same time, people don't want to see blood and guts and don't want to think of themselves or their society as inhumane or cruel. It leads to some weird mental gymnastics and contradictory policies. I think American attitudes about race (people supporting the state murdering black people, but also getting genuinely offended at being called a racist) are similarly contradictory.

SolRo - 2020-10-25

Really it’s the rope’s fault at the end of the day.

ashtar. - 2020-10-26

I'd be more willing to support the death penalty if executions were carried out by elaborate Rube Goldberg contraptions that involved bowling balls and homing pigeons and alarm clocks, and eventually the condemned is shot off into the sky on a giant firecracker.

jfcaron_ca - 2020-10-26

That, or if the King/President did the execution themselves with a melee weapon and then proudly showed off THEIR revenge-boner to the public, Game of Thrones style.

casualcollapse - 2020-10-27

Capital punishment should be illegal. The punishment should be death

Lef - 2020-10-28

Kinda seems like the ultimate extension of the logic behind the Kosher Light Switch.
