Jay's a good egg for defending Oingo Boingo. Mike on the other hand... I don't know. All I can say is I'm disappointed.

I was dreading watching this a bit, but I was happy that I did.

I always hated this movie. It always struck me as "off", somehow. I mean, I know it's going for off-kilter, but it seemed off-kilter in an unpleasant way to me when I was a kid.

Also, I'd like to offer a defense for Johnny Depp's take on the character. Yes, it was blunt & unnuanced, but that was what it made it kinda awesome. His obvious loathing for the little brats running through his factory was delightful.

Watching this I wondered if it was possible to sing the praises of the original film without using the remake as the villain of the review. It seems like the positives of the original film, as they are articulated in this view, are really made in contrast to the remake. Like, the original oompa loompa songs are good in virtue of how bad the remake songs are, etc. I duno. Just a thought. But I enjoyed this.

These HACK FRAUDS don't even know that Anthony Newley wrote the songs.

One thing I don't like about the original, and I'm kind of sad they didn't talk about, is how Charlie breaks the rules and drinks the Fizzy Lifting Drink, but doesn't get immediately Oompa Loompad out the door like the other kids. Is there an explanation to justify that?

TeenerTot - 2020-06-22

Charlie was sneaky enough to wait till nobody was watching.

simon666 - 2020-06-23

This was sort of addressed, wasn't it? I thought they noted how drinking the fizzy lifting drink was due to grandpa's "villainous" influence.
