just re-watched this recently and i guess it's redundant to say, but man it's so good.
also discovered that the aliens-are-afraid-of-fire thing is a myth? at no point does the creature flinch or recoil from the flame throwers. it's just something ash hypothesized - and obviously he didn't want the creature harmed. i thought for sure that was a thing. in alien 3 ripley says it's afraid of fire, but i think that's just a major goof. even in that movie it doesn't seem afraid of fire. maybe she had baby brain.
i figure people bought it because holm gave such a good performance - RIP sir.

The sound design is so great. The synth voice is perfect. But it's elevated by mixing in the little gargle sounds without synth effects.
Also Ian Holm is a great actor.

Holm played this role perfectly. The movie came out when I was 9, but I didn't get to see it until I was 12. Even at that age, I was able to pick up that Ash... wasn't quite right. He was eerie not because he did bad things (Even though he ended up doing some bad things near the end.) but because his" emotional" reactions to people and their emotions just weren't quite right.
Holm did an excellent job of falling into the uncanny valley. his behavior was just off enough that it was unsettling. I liked that Ash was never actually evil. He was just a robot programmed to protect the alien life form.
Michael Fassbender's portrayal of David is awful. Holm's performance seemed natural. Fassbender's seems forced. You can tell he wants to be over-the-top villainous, but that seems out of place in a robot.
Of course, the biggest problem with the David character is the writing. He's apparently a robot designed to hate people and women especially.

Also, he clearly hates women and was disappointed his daughter didn't have a cock.
Or maybe she did since the medical table in her private ship was programmed for male anatomy but she's trans and he was mad about that? So he's basically denying her control of his company and tried to build a male robot as his successor?
I don't know. The script is a mess and we can see Damon Lindelof was the real monster all along.
Come to think of it, Lindelof told a story in an interview about how his dad got angry when he caught him sneaking a peek at the end of an "Encyclopedia Brown" story and tore the last pages out of all his mystery books so he would have to figure out the endings himself. And that's why Lindelof leaves so many unanswered questions in his scripts because he wants the audience to figure it out.
Oh, god...
David was Lindelof's self-insert character.
Anyway, the moral of this story is I really fucking hate Damon Lindelof and everything he has ever touched.
