For lack of a good Star Trek show, I've been watching Gun Smoke lately. All I want out of a sci-fi/fantasy series is good writing, good characters, some levity and a solid morality tale, and Gun Smoke delivers, with many of The same actors, locations and creatives as TOS/NG/DS9.

I will defilately be pirating The Mandalorian someday soon. Star Wars desperately needs to get back to its roots. Its been a bloated, incomprehensible behemoth since the Special Editions.

Anaxagoras - 2020-02-04

That's adorable. (I don't mean this in a snarky way.)

William Burns - 2020-02-04

You want adorable? I've been watching Gun Smoke WITH MY BOOMER DAD.

Pillager - 2020-02-03

I like the way The Mandalorian uses actual tactics & cleverness to beat antagonists. Way better than Hoth or other fiascoes.

I really hated it. I guess it's sort of basically competent (especially compared to the last 6 movies), but it's just utterly predictable and boring. You know exactly where it's going to go but it takes forever to get there. It really reminded me of 90's action TV like Renegade with Lorenzo Lamas or the Highlander series, but with worse pacing.

SolRo - 2020-02-03

Are you a fan of the unpredictable ass-pulls of the new trilogy then?

ashtar. - 2020-02-04

Every movie since Return of the Jedi has been a garbage fire. This show had the basically competence and depth of, say, Walker Texas Ranger.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2020-02-04

@ashtar
Ok... But what do u think of the original star wars films..

This is the only consistent viewpoint you could have, I reckon..

prequels and new films = hot garbage fire trash from satans flaming anus (given by ashtar)
Mandalorian = competent texas ranger trash (given by ashtar)
1st two films = competent flash gordon trash (extrapolated by me)
Return of the Jedi = hot garbage trash (extrapolated by me)

That would be a totally reasonable evaluation..
But based on ure given opinions u cannot think the originals are *not* trash. That just not logically possible as far as I see it.

ashtar. - 2020-02-04

What are you even talking about?

The original films were good. Innovative and well done. Not the best movies ever but, y'know, pretty good and something different.

The prequels were weird and boring and didn't really make sense. The sequels were an ok soft remake followed by a bunch of shit crammed together by committees.

The Mandalorian wasn't terrible. You could tell what was going on and characters had understandable motivations, but it was pretty boring and shallow. Like, there's an episode where he and a sexy space chick help villagers resist space-orcs who have an imperial walker for some reason and there's a villager training montage. It's not terrible but it's just really boring and predictable.

SolRo - 2020-02-04

Wondering did you watch the whole season? I found the last couple episodes great

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2020-02-04

Ok, but theres a big part in the original films where fucking teddy bears fight storm troopers.
I seriously dont know what you see in them that differentiates them from the Mandalorian. Could it be just nostalgia? Maybe watch them again. You may be shocked.

In terms of plot there almost nothing in the originals that isnt dumb as fuck / and or extremely trite / story for children level shit.

Though, I also like them! (and I like the Mandalorian). Why? Cus of all the cool shit! cool spaceships, cool sound-effects, cool fantasy setting, cool helmets.. Basically a parade of cool shit presented in a non terrible way. I'm down with that.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2020-02-04

As a side note That may be why all the best star wars things are computer games rather than films..

eg.
dark forces
jedi knight
tie fighter

The medium of computer games is *ideal* for just having loads of cool stuff without any plot or character ; elements of drama which dont fit comfortably into the medium.

William Burns - 2020-02-05

On top of writing and directing the 3 worst movies in the franchise, George Lucas turned LucasArts from a world-class AAA game developer to a lousy clearing house for the Star Wars IP. Now EA's in control and has only released 3 Star Wars games in the last decade.

On the plus side, maybe Disney will do something with the Maniac Mansion IP one day, or do a Pirates of the Caribbean/Monkey Island crossover.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2020-02-05

Sidenote: The new dark souls clone game 'jedi: fallen order' is quite good! Theres not too much hand holding and the world is detailed and fun to explore.
So it kinda feels more like a pc game rather than a typical console game (a bit like dark souls itself) It also even looks more like a pc game.. It has really nice high-res textures, and doesnt have shitloads of bloom / screenspace effects turning everything into mud. Just nice clear crisp detailed graphics.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2020-02-05

Im guessing this is cus the specs on the latest consoles are actually approaching decent so games aimed at console can have nice graphics now.

glasseye - 2020-02-05

I really enjoyed The Mandalorian; better than any Star Wars movie, IMO.

Gmork - 2020-02-04

To counteract that guy's bad taste

TeenerTot - 2020-02-04

You all are tap dancing around the real center of this, but I'm self-confidently dorky enough to say it: Baby Yoda.

I love Baby Yoda, and I don't care what you think of me.

One aspect of the Mandalorian's production I favor is their use of vintage firearms with minor adjustments and accessories to make up the firepower of the setting, like the original trilogy did.

The Mandalorian carrying a pistol based on the Bergmann 1894, Carl Weathers' character toting a pistol based on the Steyr M1912, Gina Carano's character equipped with a pistol based on a Nambu Model 14, various modified older model airguns and gas grenade launchers to look like blasters, etc. Which like the original trilogy were just a single aspect that helped add to the lived-in feel of the setting.
