RSR you were 100% right and I was 100% wrong. At least Discovery can be air-gapped as its own terrible thing separate from the rest of trek... not this pile of shit. This turned out to be one of the worst shows I've ever seen and I've seen all of Cop Rock.

I've long stopped paying attention to their reviews. While the internet loves to cite them whenever they agree with their opinions, they're great at highlighting good/bad movies and their Star Wars breakdowns had some good insight, they're not professional or even thoughtful reviewers, and it shows.

Picard and Data were never friends in the show. The only crewmembers Picard was ever friendly with were Crusher and sometimes Riker. Movie Picard was a bit warmer towards Data, at least in the second two movies, but he was also a mercurial, violent, reckless action-hero charactature of TV Picard.

Except there's nothing to support that theory. If data and picard 'weren't friends', then neither were data and geordi. In which case you're just going MEEP MOOP DATA IS AN ANDROID AND HIS PROGRAMMING ISNT ACTUAL SENTIENCE in which case maybe but also fuck you.

Alternative consider: does picard consider DATA a friend? If we're only going to consider human affection the standard for friendship.

Picard risked his fucking life when Data began to malfunction and behave more like Lore. That scene in engineering was intense. The later seasons of TNG have Picard respecting Data and more and more as he realizes Data is not only human but a remarkable human. Data was shown to be a leader. He preferred NOT to lead but he could hold his own and then some when foisted to a leadership position. And Picard respected the Hell out of that. But yeah, at first Data being literally 'new' did his autistic robot things and at first Picard had no patience for that. (He disliked children and especially 400 lb metal children.) But those quirks were superficial at best. Picard himself began to change and grow as a character developing far more patience and an ability to see the bigger picture. There were no outward warm formalities between the two because they were the kind that didn't NEED those to be friends. To say they weren't friends by the time the series was in its final seasons is pretty oblivious.

By the end of TNG, Picard was just baaaarely comfortable enough fraternising with his crew that he joined them for a card game. This was such a big deal for him that it was the finale of the entire series.
