Josh Weinstein recently explained why he left the show recently on Bill Corbett’s podcast, and the long and short of it is that when the show moved to Comedy Central, it was noticed he was so young (21) that it was suggested he make an assistant’s salary rather than the same rate as Joel and Trace. He left on very bad terms but seems to be doing alright now, he even appeared a few times on the last Netflix season.
Without trying to start a shitstorm, I've always thought that Josh was (at that age) stunningly annoying, and that the Dr. Earhardt character was grating. What excuse who gave for getting him out of there may or may not be the true story.
I think it was a bit of both. He was a great Tom Servo but not a great Mad. When Kevin Murphy took over the role, somebody sent a gigantic banner to their office that read “I HATE TOM SERVO’S NEW VOICE,” and while the culprit has never come forth, Weinstein is the only person it makes sense coming from.
