A marked improvement to the source-material

Yeah, I couldn't stand the woman character played by Shelley Duvall.

Quit helplessly screaming & do *something*, you stupid bitch.

I dunno, shes not being attacked by some movie-monster. Shes being attacked by *her husband* .. Who she has slowly realized has gone crazy, maybe he had some kind of brain problem. She doesnt wanna hurt him.

In this scene if I remember correctly, she..
0. Mainly tried to hide from him so avoid being attacked by him without hurting him, and perhaps he'll stop being crazy?
1. barricades herself in the toilet once discovered, next best way to avoid being attacked by him without hurting him in that case.
2. Gets her son to even more safety out the window.
3. Tries to get out window herself but doesnt fit.
4. Cuts his hand with the knife (A weapon she armed herself with earlier) when he tries to open the door.

Tho I think I've only seen this film once and that was a long time ago. This is definitely my least favourite of Kubricks good (post 'the killing') films.
All the cinematography is great of course, but I just dont like any horror films.. They bore me. Not cus I am so manly nothing scares me (though I'm not ruling that out as a contributing factor), but rather they are so silly and illogical, I cant get into them. The lack of logic just distracts me too much. (Eg. I will complain about how unrealistic Star Trek is)

Good point; her actions are fine. And even her screaming is reasonable; I would probably do the same. But her performance still bugged the hell out of me.

I guess I'm just too picky when it comes to my movie protagonists.

Realize that Duvall's performance is the result of brutal bullying by Kubrick:

"As for the other iconic 'door scene', it took three days to film and used nearly 60 doors. Mainly improvised (including the 'Here's Johnny' line), Duvall remained largely in the dark about what was coming her way. Her panicked screams are that of real terror as Jack Nicholson tore down the door."

"Kubrick's unusual method of shooting the majority of the film chronologically meant that the principal photography took over a year to complete and filming took 500 days. Duvall would cry for up to 12 hours a day and eventually ran out of tears, meaning that she had to keep bottles of water by her side to keep hydrated."

Half-Life’s audio has a certain magical quality to it that I can’t quite put my finger on. Nothing sounds quite like it should and they really went all in with the weird metallic, echoing sounds. I feel that the second one (while great sounding in its own way) lost something when everything started to sound like it actually should.
