God grant me the serenity to avoid the youtube comments
The courage to skip the youtube comments
And the wisdom to avoid the youtube comments

God grant me the ability to withstand Mary Sues. God grant me the ability to weather Hollywood writers that don't understand giving your character a challenge to overcome. God grant me the wisdom to talk down to people that enjoy these movies, not knowing how bad they are.

The thing that ruined your childhood is called ADULTHOOD. Just go with it!

SolRo - 2019-07-29

If your childhood is defined as one or a handful of “good” movies then I’m sorry to tell you this but it’s actually your parents who ruined your childhood.

Maggot Brain - 2019-07-29

Stars, have 'em.

betabox - 2019-07-30

Have some more.

Born in the RSR - 2019-07-29

Fuck your childhood , bucko!

Clean your room and stop bitching!

This is like complaining they ruined the children's candies by adding too many new flavours. These products are not for you, they are for a global market that skews waaaay younger than you. It's not the communists shitting on your childhood, it's your beloved market trying to tap new sources of revenue!

Not everything is made for you, not even the brands and licenses you liked when you WERE a child.

Adham Nu'man - 2019-07-29

Yeah, these movies that are the umpteenth sequels to the movies you watched as a child are in no way designed to bring in the dollars of the people who watched them as children. The studios just wanted to pay gazillions of dollars to buy these established franchises so they could give the new generations something FRESH and NEW (THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN!!!). These are just honest to god great movies and in no way quickly regurgitated cashgrabs because Hollywood is broke for ideas. In fact, the endless stream of reboots, remakes and comic superhero adaptations are all signs of a perfectly healthy industry.

William Burns - 2019-07-29

America is no longer the hegemonic marketplace it used to be, and Hollywood isn't going to be making movies laser-focused on our market any more. Watch something else. Its not like Hollywood movies are the ONLY form of media.

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-07-29

Why should we expect good movies? We should be happy with the decay of our cinematic culture.

Born in the RSR - 2019-07-29

Why should we expect good food at McDonalds? Why should we be happy with the decay of your gastronomic culture.

SolRo - 2019-07-30

We should expect everything to be perfection because we’re entitled white people, it is our birthright!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-07-30

I think that a lot of the compaints are unfounded. The 1985 Ghostbusters movie had better jokes, but the 2016 version is superior in almost every other way in terms action, character, not having a bunch of shitty strawman characters that only exist to make Peter Venkman not seem like the worst person in the world. When we lionize Ghostbusters and Star Wars, we're lionizing cheesy tentpole franchises from the 1980s, the cheesiest era of tentpole franchses of all time.

But on the other hand, for something like 50 years, movies have been getting worse (since Star Wars), and TV has been getting better (Since All In the Family.) I'm perfectly happy with the arrangement. Wouldn't change it if I could.

Adham Nu'man - 2019-07-30

You are right, the only possible reason to find the new Star Wars movies trash is sexism and white privilege. There is nothing wrong with remaking the same old shit over and over again, it started as tentpole franchise crap back in the eighties but by remaking it over and over it just keeps getting better and better.

William Burns - 2019-07-30

Ghost Busters has been trash since Ghost Busters 2 and Star Wars has been trash since the special edition in 1997. Can you think of a better example?

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-07-30

Ghostbusters has been trash since "Ghostbusters", and Star Wars has been trash since "Star Wars". And since the point is that people are endlessly complaining about their decline, and since you're making my point for me, no.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-07-30

>>>You are right, the only possible reason to find the new Star Wars movies trash is sexism and white privilege.

I neither said nor implied nor believe that. There's also weird fetishistic devotion to the originals. Or maybe you don't like them. That was always allowed.

*** And now, to prove that I wasn't really paying attention to what YOU were saying, either, I will now devote several paragraphs to discussing an entirely different movie!***

Remember when James Rolfe, the Angry Video Game nerd, announced in a three minute video that he wasn't going to review Ghostbusters2016? The mainstream media jumped on that because it was such an obvious violation of accepted standards, and a great example of what's bad about the new media that threatens to destroy them. And it was a bad move, in my opinion.

But I love James Rolfe. He's the only guy I've ever found on the internet who shares my lifelong devotion for the original Universal Monsters of the 1930s and 1940s. James Rolfe made a hilarious video entitled "40 Shitty Shark Movies" that's not only hilarious, but how great is it that this guy actually saw FORTY shitty shark movies?

I've never seen any sign that James Rolfe is any kind of misogynist. But the first comment on his video was something on the order of "How did this misogynist manage to get himself a wife", which, when you think about it, was mostly an insult to Rolfe's wife. That comment was repeated over and over again in every fucking news story. Which led to a lot of REAL misogynists making him their champion, which for me, would have been the worst part.

That kind of mistaken assumption works both wprivelegeays. If I discuss the undeniable misogynist backlash to Ghostbuster 2016, someone will come back at me with "WHY ARE YOU CALLING ME A MISOGYNIST?" My response, invariably, is: WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU?

Now, the pre-release backlash to Ghostbusters was driven by factors other than sexism. That first trailer wasn't very good. I didn't really pick up on that right away. If you grew up in that other century, you didn't really expect much of the trailer other than to show you scenes from the movie. But now every trailer is scrutinized all over youtube like it's the zapruder film, or an old lecture from Anita Sarkeesian. Even the director didn't care for the trailer. I remember one scene from the trailer that I watched several times, never thought was funny, and then I laughed out loud in the movie.

But you were talking about Star Wars. A lot of the backlash to the new Star Wars movies baffles me. Some of it seems to be based on taking some stuff way too literally. Here's a prediction for you: The "revelations" about Rey's parents in The Last Jedi are bullshit. The truth with be revealed in part 9. Some people are really jumping the gun on that one.

But a lot of it baffles me. A lot of it seems to be based on something other then the movies, that is supposed to be canon: the books, the cartoons, the lego set? Not a clue, but it's not all sexism or white privelege.

HEY Adham Nu'man! NOW THAT I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION, I WANT TO SHOW YOU THIS VIDEO, CAUSE WE HEARD YOU LIKE THE STOOGES

https://youtu.be/VIRU6IH-3fw

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-07-30

For your consideration, as TYPO OF THE YEAR: "wprivelegeays"

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-07-30

If you were to take all remakes out of the Western Canon, you'd be left with one Shakespeare play ("The Tempest"), some 19th Century Novels, and maybe a Canterbury Tale or two.

Adham Nu'man - 2019-08-01

Thanks for the video, Funhouse is by far my favorite of the Stooges original triptych. Then many years later the band members had to reunite and try to come up with fucking SEQUELS and they just ruined my childhood.

Binro the Heretic - 2019-07-29

What a whiny twat.

TeenerTot - 2019-07-30

Seconded.

Boomer The Dog - 2019-07-30

I thought it was an electronic voice used on the video, and that's what's ruining childhood, lack of real voices.

I couldn't take it and had to bow out in under a minute, maybe it was the mood I was in.

Boom

Caminante Nocturno - 2019-07-30

The Ghostbusters remake is still a piece of shit and you're still an idiot if you defended it.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-07-30

Still wrong, Cam. I could write a term paper on how wrong you are.

Pillager - 2019-07-30

All the term papers in the world can't fix a box office dud.

betabox - 2019-07-30

I could also write a term paper about how dumb your term paper is. That wouldn't mean that either of us would get a good grade, nor would it mean that either of us had a valid point.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-07-30

Uh huh, so you've decided that my term paper is dumb before I've written it? That's pretty much what happened to Ghostbusters.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-07-30

In the end, writing a term paper to refute

>>>>The Ghostbusters remake is still a piece of shit and you're still an idiot if you defended it.

seems like a whole lot of unnecessary effort.

Nor could it turn that cartoon of an EPA instector played by William Atherton into a human being, or even something human-adjacent.

Adham Nu'man - 2019-07-31

Sorry, couldn't comment on the new Ghostbusters because I haven't watched it. no, not because I am a raging mysoginist who can't stand women in his beloved Ghostbusters, but because I don't really care much about Ghostbusters and don't care for watching yet ANOTHER reboot of an old franchise.
As far as Star Wars, I only watched the first of the new movies on an airplane and felt like I was watching a remake of A New Hope but written for an audience with ADHD. I haven't watched the original trilogy in many many years, perhaps more than a decade, but I don't remember it being so BORING.

I don't know, but aside a few isolated crazies, I don't think the most recent Mad Max received nearly as much criticism for having a female lead. In fact, that movie did not just have a female lead, it was basically DESTROY THE PATRIARCHY. The difference is that it was awesome, and not shit.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-08-01

Ghostbusters is a seperate case. They saw this one coming. The backlash began months in advance, even before the unimpressive trailer. Donald Trump released a vlog about it. "Mundane Mike", a youtube antifeminist released daily videos about it, with titles like (no kidding) "SONY, YOU WILL NOT WIN THIS BATTLE!" Again, before the release.

And they seemed to have won. A bunch of youtubers shooting in their bedrooms took down SONY's can't miss monster budget tentpole with a 74 per cent rotten tomatoes score. The reason this was possible is because in recent years movie releses are structured so that the opening weekend is everything, at least to the studio. This is why everything is a remake now. It has to come pre-sold. The only word of mouth that counts now is on the internet BEFORE the movie comes out. Based on the first weekend box office, the 1985 Ghostbusters would have been an even bigger flop.

This is their one victory, and they cling to it. To this day, whenever anyone mentions the movie anywhere on the web, some dark shade comes fluttering up from the underworld to lay down the law:

"The Ghostbusters remake is still a piece of shit and you're still an idiot if you defended it."

Every goddamn time, often in just so many words. This is not an invitation to debate. This is an attempt to strongarm the narrative. Listen, 74 PER CENT FRESH doesn't prove that I'm right if I liked it, and you're wrong if you didn't like, but you know what it does prove? It proves that "still a piece of shit and you're still an idiot if you defended it" is propaganda.

NO ONE on youtube had the temerity to support the film, certainly no one who was dependent on Patreon, but for a few weeks, between the release, and the endlessly shared story about the bad box office in Hollywood, Twitter was overwhelmingly positive. I created a Twitter account to record those times. I no longer have the password, so it's a sealed time capsule.

https://twitter.com/holtzmann426111

There was some MRA grumbling about Mad Max, to be sure, most infamously in A VOICE FOR MEN. And some vaugely racist tweeting about the black storm trooper in The Force Awakens, and an attempt to review bomb Captain Marvel because Bree Larsen is a feminazi.

You don't seem to like remakes. I really love remakes if they're good. (THE WINTER SOLDIER is when I started going to every MCU movie), and if they're not good, I don't take it personally. But not liking remakes doesn't make you a misogynist.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-08-01

Oh, and let's not forget the harassment of Ghostbusters' only African American star.

Adham Nu'man - 2019-08-01

I really liked The Ladykillers remake, and the Fargo TV series. I don't know if those count (and by the way, I hear a new Fargo season is coming out, yaaiiiii!!!).

But yes I understand there's a lot of horrible people out there, for sure.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-08-02

Well, don't let me put words in your mouth. I was just agreeing that not liking things doesn't make you a bad person. You know, from my own perspective, which happens to be a soapbox.

The first season of Fargo was just great. Second seems to have not made much of an impression on me. It seems to me that I liked it, I just can't remembe4r anything.

That guy - 2019-08-01

idk what's happening here and i don't care

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2019-08-02

I support you in this.
