0:48 (it's called Cerenkov light and it's beautiful)

0:52 'Criticality' is not a "reaction" it's a condition, a state of well-being of a population of fissile (and fissionable) materials co-existing.

0:56 Neutrons don't come as beams, here it's more like they're spraying in all directions going through everything. When a beam and specific energies are desired there is thick shielding in which they are effectively guaranteed to suffer multiple collisions, and the shield has a hole in it (material is something dense in hydrogen if specifically for neutrons, classically waxy paraffin.)

1:02 Butt!

1:07 Makes it sound like they didn't give him a choice to just die. Were they keeping him in the dark or something?

So evil

casualcollapse - 2019-06-07

Why was his heart the only thing to really survive and not necrotize?

duck&cover - 2019-06-07

He was related to the Tin Soldier.

Post-Fukushima Japan has already started to create common ghost narratives around the deaths. Sightings of people crawling out of the ocean and begging for a drive home are very common.

Does anyone believe that the Yakuza did *not* take the Fukushima incident as an opportunity to get Plutonium? I never really tried (to spread rumors embellished with carefully chosen facts and lies) so I'm putting it out there as far as I'm saying that now.

teethsalad - 2019-06-07

i've read the yakuza has been heavily involved in the clean-up with bid-rigging and skimming pay from their fairly unqualified cleanup workers, some of which have been supposedly illegal immigrants

Man, the caveman ethics in medicine during the 1950s sure were - *looks up incident on Wikipedia* - wow, 1999!

casualcollapse - 2019-06-13

He mentioned the year in the video ya dork..

*****

Americans wanted to do this full scale to Soviet troops. In the 80's the US manufactured a thousand or who knows how many Neutron Bombs in the form of 155mm artillery shells. "It makes you feel drunk, then you die"-- I firmly recall reading this as an effect of "neutron exposure" maybe actually in 1999, but in was from one of 3 books I read between 1999-2001, published in the 60's and the one I recall the title* of was in the 80's. **

(The usual sources for bulk quantities of neutrons are a reactor core itself, or for most precision an accelerator such as a Van der Graff that bombards a target, that ejects Neutrons in a very well documented and controlled manner and the flux density and energy levels are symmetrical around an axis in the area you would be putting things for tests or Human subjects in futuristic medical procedures like Neutron Capture Therapy or the one I invented, more a repurposement of NCT and not published because it would only loo intentionally provocative-- it's not efficiently available as any thing like a tight beam of light, certainly not a laser; it fans out and weakens with increased distance from the center. Shield/collimators (paraffin/window) especially with a reactor source they can have a complex thickness attempting to normalize an uneven environment of incident neutrons and vice versa, the shield not necessarily just a slab of wax with a hole bored through it. If Neutrons are being used in semiconductor manufacturing now in 2019 (maybe to create point defects in lattices) there might even be a factory specific neutron generator that warrants its own description.)

*("To Win a Nuclear War" by the South End Press had comments from the inventor unless that was another book... he thought in retrospect that something was really wrong with him for developing it. Later seen in video on youtube, Alex Cox (Repo Man) found him again. The other book, from the 60's, was called "Radiation and Life" but it' probably very obscure and a lot of books containing that string of words (its cover with no jacket was yellow and had red ink for a logo rather like Moorcock's "chaos symbol" but more like 20 arrows instead of 8-- it was a great book but ridiculously optimistic about using H-Bombs for building highways and such)

**[OFF Topic, but regarding N-Bombs] ...fantasizing that it would be practical tactically were there ever an invasion into Eastern Europe. That's why there are references to Neutron Bombs and nuclear artillery in some of my favorite movies like Repo Man or Return of the Living Dead. I thought it was a silly comic book thing (N-Bombs portrayed as something that just zaps everyone without even an explosion,) but I simply read about it in a library book that looked interesting.
The N-Bomb is like some half-assed H-Bomb because it's missing the 'reflector' that a regular H-Bomb has to direct as many neutrons as possible back into the explosion (Neutrons collide in the reflector and change direction each time maybe going back in instead of out, also slowing down which changes probability and time of interaction inside the explosion). Instead it yields as many neutrons as possible ejected outwards to penetrate armor, with an explosion supposedly high up enough to not destroy buildings and not cause so much cratering as to make the land impassible to US/Nato troops and maybe even the civilian population trying to escape fallout.

Awesome write up but your use of the word n bombs is a little funny

casualcollapse - 2020-04-30

Oh shit I have forgot I commented about this, I forgive you Gypsy

Ugh - 2019-06-07

and here i thought my last two weeks were stressful

Anaxagoras - 2019-06-10

I got to 2:20, and had to stop. One of my degrees is in biochemistry, and when I saw/heard "His chromosomes were unrecognizable.", I knew that this wasn't going anywhere that I wanted to see.

Dear Lord, that poor man.

casualcollapse - 2019-06-13

Yeah you get to see a fully exposed eye rotating in his skull so you stopped at the right point

kennydra - 2019-06-15

almost 3 months of this. apparently after two months the medical team "started to question" the morality of keeping him alive. the actual fuck. and his family was there too? if he were my family member i'd have gone in and killed him. i'd want my loved ones to do the same for me.

casualcollapse - 2020-04-30

Ewww.. thick green diarrhea are words I also never want to hear

The Mothership - 2020-09-15

Criticality. Avoid it.
