Yeah, cuz you know those hollywood types just hate patting themselves on the back.

They'll never stop having them, but maybe people can stop pretending that they are important or mean anything.

Maybe if they restricted voting on best picture (and most other awards) to professional movie critics then it would work better, but the way it’s set up now we just get to see what a bunch of bored, white Hollywood insiders bothered to see and thought was best.

The Academy has responded to criticisms of being too white and too male by extending membership to ~600 women and/or people of colour in the last two years alone. That doesn't bring membership anywhere close to equal, but it shows the beginning of a demographic shift that will be reflected in the voting pretty soon.

However, the Academy will still make terrible decisions about Best Picture because when you poll 7,000+ people the well-constructed crowd-pleasers will always rise to the top, while films enjoyed more intensely by fewer people will always sink to the bottom. So don't worry, we'll all be complaining about Oscar picks until the heat death of the universe.
