Two Jar Slave - 2019-01-16

100,000 words later, this is still the best response.

Born in the RSR - 2019-01-15

I imagine it's the same thing that was uncovered when those alt right german guys were infiltrated, a number of incel forum dorks making dozens of accounts each to boost their own shitty message.

As for gillette, yeah wherever the fad winds blow, this won't effect their bottom line one bit. And even if it did ,what are they going to do? Make Gavin McIniss their new spokesperson?

On a semi-related note, isn't this very much the style of add, like those super-melodramatic moralistic asian ones that go viral every once in a while?

Cena_mark - 2019-01-15

Right wingers: The left are easily triggered snowflakes! Waaaaay! This commercial says I shouldn't be an asshole.

Its just a bunch of pissed off MRAs and Incels.

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-01-15

I would think this commercial would go over well in conservative circles. The idea of masculinity being based on leadership by example, teaching kids not to bully each other and being decent to women is not unique to one political side.

BE A BETTER MAN.
BE AN EXAMPLE TO OTHERS.
BUY OUR RAZORS.
NO SERIOUSLY BUY OUR SHIT.

Meerkat - 2019-01-15

"teaching kids not to bully each other and being decent to women is not unique to one political side"

It is now. Welcome to 2019.

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-01-15

Oh yeah, like all the conservative dads I know who have those sneaky talks with their sons about how it's okay to bully the liberal family's kids.

Not everyone is a cartoon character just because the president is.

That guy - 2019-01-15

Have fun fighting the poetv windmill, Marlon

cognitivedissonance - 2019-01-15

IF only conservatives can define masculinity
AND conservatives are pointlessly belligerent in all circumstance
THEN conservatives define masculinity as pointless belligerence

That guy - 2019-01-15

I'm not sure that's what Marlon is saying . . . ?

Someone can be a POS for being a Trump supporter without being monolithically, cookie-cutter evil all the way across the report card.

That guy - 2019-01-15

It also turns out that some percentage of our country could be against Trump for the same general reasons that the left is, but not be on the left.

SolRo - 2019-01-16

Equally true that a double digit percentage of Americans will cheer for trump if he beats a gay black child to death on national television.

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-01-16

So glad you are staying with us in the land of reality, rather than hyperbole. That helps the left. Really.

Gmork - 2019-01-16

Uh, I've seen that conversation take place, Marlon. There are people like that.

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-01-16

Gmork, I've received hatred in my life for simply existing...and it does suck! Let me tell you something. You cannot approach people with the expectation that they are going to hate you. And you can't approach all Trump supporters, which is what, 60 million people, with the expectation that they all hate blacks, Hispanics, gays, transsexuals, etc.

I know people in literally all of those groups. Some of them are conservative. As much as the left is trying to convince you otherwise, a good portion of each, at least 20% of blacks, Hispanics, and LGBTQ people do support Trump and since all the left has right now is trying to convince people that Trump is evil and hates those groups, of course they are freaking out and pushing that idea.

BUT IT'S NOT FUCKING WORKING.

If Trump gets even a slight margin more of the black vote, he will win the next election. And that is happening.

It's open war in the House and Senate and I couldn't be more miserable over the hatred that exists between the two sides. We have a culture war in America and the biggest danger to us is from within. There is a real potential for our country to split apart over this. To blame Trump is missing the point. Totally. No one person is responsible for the culture war.

What really gets to me is that Trump has done things I am not okay with and that I disagree with and I am a moderate libertarian conservative. The left could go after him for things that matter...but they don't! Because they are fucking idiots. Trying to align yourself with a goddamn porn star? Are you out of your fucking so called minds? You honestly thought that was going to get him impeached, you dumb motherfuckers?

I don't give a fuck about the religious principles issue so much as not wanting this country to go fucking bankrupt being in countries we don't belong in (which is all of them) after the Midwest was decimated economically, all while the East and West Coast conveniently overlooked this as Obama marched happily along touting the line that everything was fine now. No, everything was not fine. Yes, he fucked over liberals because he didn't even bother to differentiate himself from conservatives in terms of foreign war policy. Fuck that absolute arrogant cunt. And fuck Trump for being an arrogant cunt. They are both cunts. I hate them both. But at least Trump is TRYING to protect our country's economy from being totally fucked over forever by China.

I tried giving Obama a chance and then he bombed Libya, Yemen, Syria. Fuck that cunt. Fuck anyone that agreed with him or supported him because you're a fucking hypocrite. You helped Trump get elected by not fucking saying anything about all the shit that Obama did and got away with and Trump weaponized all that and it fucking worked.

My biggest problem is with both sides being cartoonishly ridiculous in their own self-assessment. Everyone is perfectly good. Have you noticed that? Everyone is good and the other side is EVIL.

I hate everyone equally. You're all idiots. Congratulations!

This commercial is a stupid attempt at guilting out all men into believing that they have something to apologize for. I'm fucking sick of the attitude. Stop asking for apologies all the goddamn time. Fucking get over it. Move on with your pathetic dumb life. I know I have.

Pillager - 2019-01-16

Elon Musk wants to target women for his Self Driving Tesla:

"Commercial show various women texting, talking on smart phones, applying make up and/or eating all while driving recklessly, causing Michael Bay like explosive accidents

Closing line: You just can't help it. Buy a Tesla"

SolRo - 2019-01-16

A razor commercial gave brandow a full on aneurysm

Rafiki - 2019-01-15

I read an article about this ad and a rep from Gillette said they consulted "masculinity experts" to help inform the ad. I'm dying to know what that means. Like, if they telephoned Bruce Willis, ok, fair. That's fair. Otherwise, how does one become credentialed as an expert in "masculinity?" It sounds like such a hilariously stupid concept.

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-01-15

You have to have an M.M.A. Master of the Masculine Arts

The graduation ceremony requires belching.

Raggamuffin - 2019-01-15

pretty sure it would be a psychologist who specifically studies masculinity?

Binro the Heretic - 2019-01-15

The worst thing about being bullied as a kid were the other kids just & stared. Most didn't even seem amused. I could at least understand if they got some sick pleasure out of watching me get humiliated & tortured by another group of kids, but they didn't even look as though they were enjoying it. They were just watching it all happen.

The second worst thing was being told by adults that I somehow brought it on myself by not fighting back. Imagine if you went to the cops & told them some random dude & two of his buddies just started hitting & kicking you and they responded by saying you should have hit them back but harder.

cognitivedissonance - 2019-01-15

It's almost as if a huge chunk of alt-media advertising dollars come from razor subscription services or something.

That guy - 2019-01-15

count me in Binro because this is horseshit, bud

Binro the Heretic - 2019-01-15

"Horseshit" in what sense?

That guy - 2019-01-15

Well, you can editorialize in the description, but then I'm basing my stars and reaction on that.

If you don't see how ham-handed this shit is, I feel sorry for you.

Binro the Heretic - 2019-01-15

When I was growing up, the moral of practically every TV show or movie about a kid being bullied was that the victim had to become really good at physically assaulting people if they didn't want to be bullied anymore.

And if the small kid didn't work & train really hard to be muscular and good at fighting, they deserved what they got.

Yes, this is a commercial. Yes, it is heavy-handed. But I think of how differently things might have been if more shows & movies had pushed the message that stopping bullies from bullying was the right thing to do.

Binro the Heretic - 2019-01-15

And girls had it equally shitty. The moral of every show or movie about an awkward social outcast girl was that if she just got a makeover & looked really hot, her life would improve dramatically.

We were saturated with shitty messages all around.

That guy - 2019-01-15

including this, though

BHWW - 2019-01-15

Oh, why would anyone not be appreciative of being sermonized at by a fucking toiletries company, fuck's sake.

Hurrr, only MRAs would hate this ad, the usual suspects say. Here's a hint, perhaps a lot of people don't appreciate marketing by companies that clumsily implies the people buying your products are date rapists, bullies, and negligent fathers who need to straighten up.

As for the response, there's plenty examples to be found here for the "your resistance proves your guilt" file:

https://twitter.com/hashtag/GilletteAd?src=tren

Also a whole lot of "how DARE you show emotion just because you were ordered to show emotion". That's a twofer on the cognitive dissonance.

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-01-15

Goofus tells his son "Go kick his ass after school." and points at the kid Goofus doesn't like.

Gallant tells his son to knock it the fuck off when the neighborhood kids start throwing rocks at each other.

Goofus never shaves because fuck, society, maaan.

Gallant shaves every day, because he cares what society thinks.

BUY GILLETTE RAZORS, MOTHERFUCKERS

Maggot Brain - 2019-01-15

Are the Gillette people trying to get ahead of a story here? WHAT DID MR. GILLETTE DO?!?!?!

glasseye - 2019-01-15

Such fragility. I don't get it.

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-01-15

Just playing around with this. Try to switch genders for this commercial. You see women who are living up to all of the worst stereotypes for women. They are gossiping about girls they don't like, making them feel horrible about their looks, golddigging and marrying men for their money just so they can get a fat divorce settlement later, fake crying, nagging their boyfriends, flirting to get out of a speeding ticket...

Then the GOOD women show up to show those bitches how to act like a real woman.

BUY GILLETTE RAZORS.

SolRo - 2019-01-16

The important message is to keep being a constant consumer

BHWW - 2019-01-16

I don't think people would be acting as blase about the "toxic masculinity" creep in general, or it's making it's way into the field of, say, psychology if it were fundie Christians having theories about women having mental problems from not being feminine in the correct way. This "toxic masculinity" stuff is going to be used in schools and shit.

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-01-16

It's essentially telling a generation of men that they should be ashamed to lust after women in a non approved way that could even be marginally interpreted as disrespectful. And that they are naturally predatory bullies that can't stop treating people like shit because it's built into their genome. What could possibly go wrong there!

Binro the Heretic - 2019-01-16

I absolutely think a commercial needs to be made encouraging women to stand up for girls who are being bullied.

And it's not saying men are "naturally" bullies. It's saying we encourage bullying or at least fail to discourage it. You'll notice there are very few actual bullies in the commercial. It's not portraying all the men as bullies.

What the commercial attacks is the way men are encouraged to believe certain behaviors are "more manly" and that to interfere with another male engaging in abusive behavior is "unmanly."

glasseye - 2019-01-16

Toxic masculinity is a real problem. Putting it in quotes won't make that fact go away.

If your response to an ad that says "hey guys, let's not be asshole cavemen, we can do better" is triggered outrage, you are part of the problem.

cognitivedissonance - 2019-01-16

We used to have a term, we called it "gentleman". A gentle man. It was considered the highest form of manhood. One wasn't eligible for holding office without possessing the qualities of gentlemanliness. These qualities involved putting the needs of women first, abiding by non-violent codes of conduct, solving problems via established rules of order, and being humble and industrious as ends unto themselves.

cognitivedissonance - 2019-01-16

In fact, we removed a Vice President from office for engaging in duels. His plinth in the hall of vice presidential busts in the Capitol crypt is empty.

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-01-16

Okay, you guys are coming up with some credible arguments here regarding problems in our society but I still think it's dangerous to teach kids to view all masculinity as inherently flawed, and that is the default logic being pushed lately. The associations are irresponsible when you have people in authority telling boys not to be aggressive, ever. That's an extreme response. Boys fight and they push each other around and they play much rougher than girls. So are we going to tell them that natural impulse behavior is evil and has to be stamped out?

Also, for the record, I don't really want to take my moral cues from a fucking toiletry company. It's so unbelievably arrogant on the part of Gillette to think we need them to point all of this out to us, the dumb plebes who have never heard that bullying is bad and that men shouldn't act like assholes. It is bewildering that they thought that through various meetings where they created this sermon of a commercial, no one had the practical idea that associating your product with a moral or ethical lecture could possibly be construed as insulting to people that do not require a razor commercial to make them reevaluate their interactions and inspire them to live life a new way.

Unless they did anticipate that, because who wouldn't, and just wanted to create controversy to bring attention to their company. Advertisers aren't stupid but they do miss the mark sometimes so I'm curious as to whether they didn't see this reaction coming from people that this will inevitably rub the wrong way as they tell all of their consumers not to act like assholes OR if this was a carefully constructed attempt at enraging enough consumers to get attention.

Marlon Brawndo - 2019-01-16

Oh and Gillette took a 20% drop in the overall shaving product market in just a few years because of new competition. So I'm sure they are only doing this because they care.

Two Jar Slave - 2019-01-16

It's an ad pandering to liberal puritans, because someone in the ad company identified that there are enough liberal puritans out there at the moment to make the ad worthwhile. Settle down, everyone.

glasseye - 2019-01-16

I doubt they predicted that suggesting not being an asshole is a good thing would enrage so many people.

betamaxed - 2019-01-17

If it were me running the marketing department I'd just throw the Gillette logo over this clip and call it a day

https://youtu.be/kf0ZvY2usbY

Mister Yuck - 2019-01-17

With the church irrelevant and the state crippled, corporations are trying to become the moral voice of our nation. Joy.

It's not that I disagree with the message in this clip, it's that I disagree with the messenger. Shove those razors up your ass Gillette, I'm gonna go throw a rock at a kid just because you told me not to.
