I've witnessed bigger fights at karaoke bars, I'd hardly call that massive.

Old_Zircon - 2018-10-14

The 2000 DNC convention protests in Boston had bigger fights, it's just that they were between protestors and cops and weren't as easily matched. One person I had a class with was beaten so hard they shattered one of her arms, and she was just standing there with a sign, and that was tame compared to shit my parents saw in the 60s and 70s.

What I'm saying is this is bad but it's hardly the first or worst.

But I agree, it's definitely another of many signs of worse to come.

Old_Zircon - 2018-10-14

(at the karaoke bar, a heckler smashed a bottle and tried to stab the host after she stopped the show and yelled at him for disrespecting the spirit of karaoke; there were 7 arrests but no injuries)

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2018-10-15

Of all your crazy goddamn stories, OZ, the karaoke riot might be the craziest one I've heard yet.

teethsalad - 2018-10-15

there were something like 2,000 acts of political bombing in the united states from like 1971-1972

things have been waaaaay worse than this before, but it helps the GOP in the midterms to play up the civil strife/"law and order" angle

Old_Zircon - 2018-10-15

It was white people karaoke. Karaoke night at Bella Luna in Jamaica Plain, MA in 2002 or 2003.

Korean karaoke places are way more hardcore but they are also respectful of each other, because KTV is serious business.

Old_Zircon - 2018-10-15

The irony is that I live a very boring life, I just make it a habit to be around the sorts of situations and people that lead to good stories.

Or at least I used to, everyone interesting has been priced out of town in the last 4 years. These days the biggest story I'm likely to have is "another person got mad at me because I didn't agree with them that using Uber is a progressive political act" because variations of that have happened more than once (my favorte was "Uber will let me choose the gender of my driver so you are a misogynist for not using Uber" which was less than a week before the first big round of Uber executive sexual misconduct reports came out). My life's so bland these days that my boss literally called the police because there was a syringe on the front steps when we opened up a couple weeks ago (the cops didn't give a single shit, which is maybe the first good thing I've heard about the cops around here).

Although I did unexpectedly meet Michael Palin a couple days ago, so that's unusual I guess. He seemed nice, and he's the only famous person I've bumped into that I give a single shit about since I almost knocked down James Brown on my way to the subway after work back in 2005.

Old_Zircon - 2018-10-15

Also what Teethsalad said.

Actually, just yesterday I learned that someone I know has a mughsot of her dad from when he was arrested for blowing up an ROTC in 70 or 71 (he didn't do it, they had a photo of him throwing a "bomb" but it was actually just a brick - someone else blew it up).

And as bad as Trump is well need at least half a million more dead bodies before Trump can even think about stepping to GW Bush in terms of creating pure human misery. Trump is a horrible person and his election is a tragedy, but as far as actual policy he's very much a mainstream Republican and if anything his administration has been too incompetent to do as much damage as Bush or Reagan (who may have been personally incompetent, but had administrations staffed by some of the most vile political operatives of the last 60 years). Kavanaugh isn't even Trump's fault really, that was just GOP business as usual. Trump's advisers chose him from a Heritage Foundation list and Congress appointed him.

Pillager - 2018-10-14

Turn them loose on each other in the Dakotas. Preferably with Artillery & Napalm.

You People Are Idiots - 2018-10-14

muh both sides

Commander Tugboat - 2018-10-14

always remember that fascists and antifascists are two sides of the same coin, and by that i mean that they're exactly the same thing, so i guess they're like the same side of the coin??? that;s got to be a big coin!! anyway they're the same, just like matter and antimatter

Scrimmjob - 2018-10-15

Fuck yeah, my fellow brainiacs. I just popped in to drop off my holier than thou two cents on this topic! Man this place is fucking stupid. Welp see you tomorrow!

Old_Zircon - 2018-10-15

It's like a South Park episode without the jokes, just the equivalence and strawmanning.

bawbag - 2018-10-15

Fishhook theory is more accurate.

Old_Zircon - 2018-10-15

Yeah, the "far left" in the USA is the center left of 50 years ago. IT's not very left at all.

That said, I still don't really support punching nazis as a form of political action (if it's to protect yourself or others when, say, Gavin McGinnes is coming at you with a sword with two dozen of his goons behind him, like what happened this weekend in NYC, then that's a different matter), it just makes them martyrs. I think a really brutal atomic wedgie would be more effective, since there's so much seething sexual insecurity under the surface of the entire alt-right it seems more effective to humiliate them and keep it below the belt.

Unrelated to anything, I've been seeing Blue Lives Mater plates on official state vehicles this month, and so have a lot of my friends and coworkers. Seems like this is as good a place as any to mention that.

Old_Zircon - 2018-10-15

I like how most of that Wikipedia article about horseshoe theory is about how it has been rejected for being obvious bullshit by pretty much everyone across the entire political spectrum.

Two Jar Slave - 2018-10-16

I don't know much about anything, but it seems to me that punching neo nazis in a street rally is one of the best things a person can do to support neo nazis.

You People Are Idiots - 2018-10-16

^dumbest guy in the thread so far

"""uhhh beating the nazis up is totally supporting them u guyz durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrhrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrmrrrrrrghhhdjf gsdfg""""""""

""""""""I don't know much about anything"""
yea no shit genius

Two Jar Slave - 2018-10-16

Meh, think what you want. From the little I know about far right-wing ideology, a lot of it seems to hinge on hypermasculinity coupled with a sense of societal persecution. I don't see how punching those types in the streets would do anything but prove them right (in their very wrong eyes, I mean), and give them more ammunition to recruit others. Like how bombing Afghan villages nets you more terrorists, not fewer.

But, yeah, it's true that I also walk around the block saying duuuuurrrrrrrrf! hurrrrggg dddduuuurrrr! so, who knows? I mean, who really knows?

Nominal - 2018-10-16

YPaI sole purpose to exist is to be an antagonistic dick to everyone and feigns whatever belief will justify it, like a shouting campus preacher.

Literally his sole purpose. It's right there in his account name.

Two Jar Slave - 2018-10-16

Oh, for sure. I just wanted to clarify what I meant anyway.

You People Are Idiots - 2018-10-16

Xenocide - 2018-10-14

I seem to hear about these things happening in Portland far more often than anyplace else. What's going on, Portland?

jangbones - 2018-10-14

Portland is AWESOME maybe?

cognitivedissonance - 2018-10-15

Portland is a city where the young go to retire.

Nominal - 2018-10-15

A limestone buoy in a sea of acid.

Old_Zircon - 2018-10-15

Bunch of upper class hipsters from Boston (and probably NYC but a TON of people from Boston), as well as tech professionals from SF and Seattle, emigrated there in the first part of the decade and gentrified out a lot of the locals. Pretty sure that tension is a big factor.

Something similar has bee going on in Providence and there's so much animosity here between a few local communities and the a coalition of universities, corporate donors and a few of the bigger nonprofits, who amount to a colonizing force at this point, it's like nothing I've experienced before and is extremely alienating. I moved here in 2009 and it was not like this at all, but over the last decade it has gotten extremely socially segregated by race, sexual orientation, age and gender, but mostly by class. It sucks.

Miss Henson's 6th grade class - 2018-10-15

George H.W. Bush used to call Portland "Little Beirut."

Old_Zircon - 2018-10-15

My dad grew up in St Helens, back then it was illegal for anyone who wasn't white to be in the county after sunset. He was a berry picker with some native American, Chinese and even black friends (there were not many black people in Oregon in the 1950s and 60s since it was literally illegal for them to live in most of the state) so he was pretty acutely aware of it.

Anyone who's actually spent more than a week in Oregon who doesn't associate the state with beautiful land, racism, meth and incest hasn't been paying much attention. Oregon is hard fucking core.

Old_Zircon - 2018-10-15

But it's also the most beautiful place I've ever seen in the world, with the possible exception of the West coast of Newfoundland.

Chancho - 2018-10-15

lol Americans "fighting"

The Mothership - 2018-10-15

Got nothing on WTO 99.

Old_Zircon - 2018-10-15

I've got the "K.O. the WTO" documentary (no idea if it was actually officially released) on a home-dubbed VHS tape, been considering showing it for an MNR off night if I can find it. The only possible mention ofit I can find online is in German:

https://www.heise.de/tp/features/Die-Wahrheit-ist-eine-Bedrohu ng-3433567.html

I found my copy in the summer of 2004 right around when that was written, but that's all I know. From what I remember it's basically a compilation tape of video shot by the actual demonstrators juxtaposed with cable news coverage.

Accidie - 2018-10-15

hey, everybody's gotta have a hobby

Marlon Brawndo - 2018-10-15

Well at least the window installation industry has nothing to worry about.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2018-10-15

I keep seeing title as

Massive *Owl* breaks out between left and right wing protesters in Portland, Oregon...

which sounds a lot awesomer
