I think it was nothing more (nor less) than him being a big fan of the Chipmunks(!). At least, that's what I remember him saying at his John Waters Christmas show a couple years back.

I do better remember that he said he went to see the film afterwards and felt very awkward as the only non-parent adult in the theatre.

Let's see...
Tragically ludicrous? Check.
Ludicrously tragic? Bagdasarian has shown himself to be overprotective of the franchise, so check.
Checks out.

He lusted in his heart for Alvin specifically.

Alvin is the personification of transgression. If there is a rule, he will break it.

The truly ludicrous tragedy with Ross Bagdasarian Jr. isn't that he's overprotective of the Chipmunks. He'll at least end a contract if he feels it's not properly enforced. No, it's that he's managed to squeeze four decades out of his father's characters despite no indication that anyone still wants to see the Chipmunks in anything.

Imagine being Ross Bagdasarian Jr.

His father created three fictional sons to serve as your personal meal ticket. Said fictional sons have inexplicable popularity among children who don't care what is on television. I remember very distinctly being perfectly willing to watch the 80s Chipmunks cartoon because it was colorful, had loud, annoyingly voiced characters which behaved in reassuring, predictable ways, and was on between Gummi Bears and Captain N.

And if you, Ross Bagdasarian Jr, think for just one moment that letting up the momentum on the Chipmunk Christmas Album royalty bullet train, you have your good family name to consider. There will always be autoprogrammed FM stations in every radio market of the United States where that damn thing will be in the rotation once hourly for 1/6th of the year, every year, forever, and sometimes, COMPETING stations. Even if you do nothing, you will always make money, until they rewrite the goddamn Mickey Mouse copyright laws.

The Chipmunks are the tomato in any cartoon sandwich. At this point, they're just there due to the expectation that they'll always be there.
