Caminante Nocturno - 2018-05-18

This video is like a Mr. Show skit that accidentally became real life.

I propose that we burn the California Institute of the Arts to the ground.

BHWW - 2018-05-18

What stuck me was how lazy it looks, a product squeezed out of dispenser tube, the result of network suits saying "This is cheap. This is popular. This is a property we own. Combine the three."

Xenocide - 2018-05-18

It's funny how everyone blames CalArts for the current popular Steven Universe-ish cartoon style, when Rebecca Sugar is one of the few prominent creators who didn't go to CalArts.

Marlon Brawndo - 2018-05-18

I don't lump Steven Universe in with the glut of lazy animation flooding the marketplace these days. It's got amazingly beautiful background designs and storyboarding.

Maggot Brain - 2018-05-18

That is by far the worst man bun I have ever seen.

Xenocide - 2018-05-18

It's a fantastic show, but there's no doubt that its art style has influenced many other cartoons, a lot of which suck.

Nikon - 2018-05-19

I despise the generic, shitty character designs.
Five for banal, wretched evil.

smoothw - 2018-05-18

Nothing wrong with going after that Teen Titans Go money.

duck&cover - 2018-05-18

I want Thundercats in 3D animation.

And what is up with that animators hair?

Xenocide - 2018-05-18

Sword of Omens, help me cut this fucker's weeaboo topknot off.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2018-05-18

Why does modern everything suck so fucking bad?

Cena_mark - 2018-05-19

It doesn't, you're just focusing on the bad. Steven Universe, Star Vs The Forces of Evil, Gravity Falls, OKKO, Over the Garden Wall, the New Duck Tales, all great cartoons.

Marlon Brawndo - 2018-05-18

"I loved Thundercats as a kid, so I decided to ruin it for a whole new generation!"

BHWW - 2018-05-18

Good to know the uglification of modern animation is not limited to shows aimed at "mature" audiences i.e. every other such series being edgy cartoons with character designs that look like the bastard children of Family Guy and GoAnimate, it's arguably worse with the cartoons for kids, everything's coming up soft, blobby, beanfaced Stephen Universe but worse bullshit. Hanna-Barbera and Filmation dreck look competent compared to this.

Style? This, there's just no style, no substance, just packing every frame with as much litter as possible and hope it comes across as quirky.

"What about the theme music?"
"I know what, let's mash a synth keyboard with an anime soundboard and if we play it too fast nobody can say it sounds generic."

Nikon - 2018-05-20

Agreed. Cartoons used to look better:

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2018-05-18

"Step one: the intro."
"The intro is the LAST thing you do!"
"Oh, use some common sense, son. If you don't know some show's intro, how do you know what to make?"
"Concept pitch!"
"Series bible!"
"Animatics!"
"And the INTRO!"

Maggot Brain - 2018-05-18

Other cartoon they could have made....

Taxi Driver Babies
Yo, Rambo!
Scooby Doo Meets Emmanuelle
Top Cat but Top Cat is a male prostitute

Xenocide - 2018-05-18

This looks ugly and stupid, but at the same time, what the fuck else are they going to do with the Thundercats? The franchise has just been sitting dead for the past seven years.

They already tried giving it a mature psuedo-anime reboot. It flopped and was cancelled after one season. Also everyone looked like they were about to start singing about Mr. Macavity.

Face it people, it's either this, or LightningFurries gets written off forever. And where will the children of tomorrow be if they don't know all about Snarf and his bullshit?

Maggot Brain - 2018-05-18

"Do you you want YOUR kids to find out about Snarf on the street!?"

BHWW - 2018-05-19

They could just not reboot any series they happen to own into a cheap, Deviantart OC-lookin' vehicle for shitty jokes and meme references.

Maggot Brain - 2018-05-19

-Well, what's the worst that can happen? It's not like the director is going to add a self-insert character that creeps on the lead protagonist who is technically still a child, right?

Marlon Brawndo - 2018-05-19

You know, it always bothered me that the show stopped addressing the fact that Liono was a literal manchild after like three episodes or so. Like the writers just didn't want to deal with it anymore and then when they ran out of ideas, they just introduced a bunch of new Thundercats. Gargoyles did the same thing.

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2018-05-20

ThunderCats at least doesn't worry about consistency. Gargoyles is what happens when it decides consistency makes a great suppository.

Redford - 2018-05-19

"Thunder Neko."

I can just imagine the meeting.

"Hey guys, let's re-make Thundercats except it looks like Steven Universe and the person in charge in a weeb. Weebs are relatable, right?"

This is coming from a person who has worked in an environment where I had to sleep with people who unironically decorated their rooms with wall scrolls.

Marlon Brawndo - 2018-05-19

I'm so sorry. No one should have to live in a crackhouse, a place with cockroaches, bedbugs, or wall scrolls. The human mind can only take so much.

garcet71283 - 2018-05-19

Can we finally agree that Steven Universe was simply meh and most of the positive fanfare comes from the fact that there was a lesbian character in a children’s cartoon? Pretty much the same can be said for Avatar: The Last Airbender which was pretty much forgotten until Legend of Kora which again, lesbian character. The formula for success is dodgey animation with a lesbian character that one third of the audience can identify with, the other third can justify their fandom by “see, it has mature themes!” And the other third can creep out about on deviantart.

Hazelnut - 2018-05-19

Nope. Despite a weaker season 5, SU is still fucking amazing: beautiful imagery, compelling story, exciting characters, moving moments. Wonderful influence on kids.

Sure is a shitty influence on other animators though. Like Tolkien vs the Tolkien clones.

Xenocide - 2018-05-19

Hazelnut is right. A lot of the backlash against SU resorts to the same old "YOU ONLY LIKE THIS BECAUSE IT'S GOT A MINORITY IN IT" excuse that people use to bash anything that has a minority in it (for instance, according to some parts of the internet, Black Panther was only a hit because of "virtue signaling." That movie made $1.4 billion. I guess people are REALLY fond of signaling their virtue.)

But the big themes and story beats of Steven Universe actually don't have much to do with the lesbians at all. It's fantastic with or without them. None of the gay themes in Steven Universe even showed up until the start of the second season, and the show had already become widely popular by then.

Marlon Brawndo - 2018-05-19

Steven Universe has a lot of genuinely cool mysteries and reveals. The fact that characters keep evolving and changing and don't remain in the same place physically or emotionally is great to watch because usually kids cartoons are too lazy for that. Lars and Sandy especially have come a really long way in the last season. The last episode finally revealed the mystery behind Pink Diamond and I find it refreshing that a kids cartoon can hold so many Easter eggs and manage to still surprise me.

I hold Steven Universe in the same high regard I have for Gravity Falls. The storylines hold up with or without minority characters. Peridot alone is worth watching that show now.

Though I do want Jamie the mailman to get killed off. He is so unnecessary.

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-05-19

Avatar was never 'forgotten' in any way, and people reacted negatively to Korra. Not because the main character was a lesbian, but because it was bad.

Xenocide - 2018-05-19

Yeah, but Korra's bisexuality wasn't revealed until the very last episode of the series. In the first two seasons she dated guys. So I'd say that one's not the best example. People disliked Korra because its writing was inconsistent and in season two every single character turned into a gigantic unlikable shithead.

garcet71283 - 2018-05-19

You all make solid arguments but I will always stand by my argument that Black Panther is essentially “White Guilt: The Movie” and the critical response flavored the public reaction before it was even out. It wasn’t a bad film, just forgettable and meh.

Xenocide - 2018-05-19

That's pretty funny considering that BP was written by two black guys, directed by another black guy, starred almost nothing but black people, and its main theme was isolationism VS outreach, which has been a point of contention in the black community for decades.

If you got "white guilt" from all that, maybe that's an object lesson in how some white people feel the need to make everything about themselves.

Cena_mark - 2018-05-20

SU is the greatest cartoon today. Don't compare this to SU. Even if the drawing style is similar. It's the writing that makes SU stand out.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-20

>>:>You all make solid arguments but I will always stand by my argument that Black Panther is essentially “White Guilt: The Movie”It wasn’t a bad film, just forgettable and meh.

Wouldn't a movie about White Guilt have more white people in it?

>>>> and the critical response flavored the public reaction before it was even out.

>>> and the critical response flavored the public reaction before it was even out.

Critiics influencing the public? Get out of here with that Alex Joines conspiracy bullshit.

>>>It wasn’t a bad film, just forgettable and meh.

The great thing about Black Panther is that it was a superhero movie, and not much more. As a superhero movie, i thought it really worked. The action sequences were exceptional, the story was compelling, the anti-hero was especially compelling, and the African setting gave the sets, locations, and costumes their own unique look.

Ugh - 2018-05-19

ugh

Ugh - 2018-05-22

lol even sienna d'enema's thundercunts video is full of new comments bashing this reboot's style

this is hot garbage but color me surprised at the scale of the outrage

are these thunder cants part of a large community? is this a lingering group of fans from the last reboot?

besides why did they reboot these felines again, cant someone talented redo pirates of the dark water so we can finally resolve that poor aborted plot?

teethsalad - 2018-05-19

so fucking sick of reboots

Cena_mark - 2018-05-19

The new Ducktales is great.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-21

Suck it everyone, I love reboots!

The Marvel movies, the new Twin Peaks, the new MST3K, The New PeeWee movie, Westworld, 2/3 of the New Star Movies. They're working on a new Arrested Development Season.

What I love most about reboots is that wonderful moment when I am SURPRISED BY THE FAMILIAR. I've never had an orgasm that was as thrilling as the moment in the 2009 Star Trek when LEONARD GODDAMN NIMOY suddenly enters the image. Later, the older Spock and the younger Spock meet, and a fifty year character arc that is largely about Spock learning to embrace his human side is distilled into a single powerful moment.

Oh how about the moment in Twin Peaks, Season 3, when Albert comes in from the rain, steps up to the bar, approaches a mysterious woman, and says "Hello, Diane!"? It was a 25 year payoff.

I'm sure there are bad reboots, but I can't think of any right now, because they don't matter next to the great experiences when it really really works. Classic movies have been surviving bad remakes for almost a century. There arealways bad productions of Hamlet, but Shakespeare endures.

SolRo - 2018-05-22

Robocop

TeenerTot - 2018-05-19

This is why people think millennials suck.

Hegemony Cricket - 2018-05-19

Zach Galifianakis needs to ratchet back the self-parody.

Man-buns are 21st century comb-overs.

Nominal - 2018-05-20

More the 21st century ponytail.

At least there's not chopsticks in it.

cognitivedissonance - 2018-05-19

Nickelodeon just bonds your kids to iconography which is then stamped onto consumer products as pre-verbal marketing tactic.

Cartoon Network replaces human bonding between the ages of 12 and 30 with shared fandom experiences, which are specifically engineered to appeal to developmental niches at the time in a human’s early adult life when they’re imprinting upon themselves social groups, lifestyle choices and self-identification cues. The young adult who chooses to associate with one fandom over another is declaring their social grouping for the rest of their life, at a time when they’re least capable of understanding the ramifications of doing so, discretely removed from establishment coming of age traditions that a generation earlier performed the same task but allowed for clearly stated ramifications of those choices. A Steven Universe fan is declaring something different from a My Little Pony fan, and they don’t fully know yet what that is, and we might not know for another decade.

Binro the Heretic - 2018-05-19

Why the fuck is this not called "Thundercats Ho!"?

Maggot Brain - 2018-05-19

I knew I was saving these for someone.

Xenocide - 2018-05-19

If she breathe, she a Thundercat.

badideasinaction - 2018-05-19

I'm guessing it's something stupid like "That URL was taken" or "It sounds too much like Teen Titans Go" or such.

Nominal - 2018-05-20

Thundercats Blow

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-19

Still looking forward to "Thundercats on a Hot Tin Roof"

SolRo - 2018-05-19

I don't really care.

I watched the original show when I was young. I liked it. It wasn't some unique beacon of perfection shining on the horizon that shant be approached or defiled.

So, do whatever. I've long since moved on.

SolRo - 2018-05-19

Also irony for people getting riled up about a show featuring cat aliens and a magic sword NOT BEING TAKEN SUPER SERIOUSLY.

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-05-19

Whoa, check out Mr. Cool Dude here, letting us know he's too good for something.

SolRo - 2018-05-19

Why do you care? I don't remember any pedobait being in the show to make you care

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-05-19

You don't?

SolRo - 2018-05-19

Never mind. just remembered one of the twins is an underage cat girl.

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-05-19

Ha ha ha, look at this pathetic manchild remembering shit about Thundercats.

SolRo - 2018-05-19

A pedo gamergate incel call me a manchild doesn't hurt that much.

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-05-19

Mr. Cool Dude's too busy finding stuff to not care about to be hurt.

SolRo - 2018-05-19

(lights up cigarette, gets on Mr Cool motorcycle, rides off into sunset)

infinite zest - 2018-05-20

Mr Cool Motorcycle should be the name of a Japanese thrash rock band.

Nominal - 2018-05-20

Someone had to take over for WHO WANTS DESSERT.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-20

I think Caminante Nocturno is just pissed at SolRo for stealing his motorcycle.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-20

i always thought Thdercats looked like cheap, recycled He Man bullshit. This looks like a thundercats I might watch.

infinite zest - 2018-05-20

I was always more of a Silverhawks kid

Macho Nacho - 2018-05-20

I'm giving this 5 stars because for how the staff is reacting to the negative backlash the show is receiving and the transparent sucking-up of the from other people in the animation industry.

BHWW - 2018-05-20

It's kinda nuts how there's like, 10 times more people falling over themselves to defend Thundercats Roar and swinging their fists at an elaborately constructed "UGH CALARTS" strawman than I've seen people complain about the show in that specific way, or insisting all the backlash is only from upset Thundercats superfans.

About everyone complaining about it is either like mocking the strangely defensive attitude animation adjacent people got about it or just saying "ugh, another soulless reboot" and rolling their eyes at it or unfavorably comparing it to shows like 'Teen Titans Go' and leaving it alone.

Random Commentors on twitter: this looks stupid, generic and has no personality.

Some "Animator" with a Blue Checkmark: "THESE PEOPLE JUST SAYING "CALARTS" OVER AND OVER AGAIN DRIVE ME INSANE! IF YOU'RE NOSTALGIC OVER THUNDERCATS I PERSONALLY HOPE YOU GET A FLESH EATING VIRUS OR SIT ON AN IRON SPIKE AND(1/453)"

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-05-20

That breed of crybaby is the norm in so many mediums these days, and I'm still not sure how it happened.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-20

Well, I'm sure that when you burn the California Institute of the Arts to the ground, it'll teach those crybabies a lesson.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2018-05-20

Things not worth getting upset over.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-20

So it looks like there are two sides to this:

People who care about this are terrible.

People who don't care about this are terrible.

SolRo - 2018-05-20

The only way to win is to not have ever heard of this and Rangoon fucked it up for all of us.

Thanks Rangoon!

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-20

Seventy comments! This is what people who don't care about the royal wedding get excited about.

>>>It's kinda nuts how there's like, 10 times more people falling over themselves to defend Thundercats Roar and swinging their fists at an elaborately constructed "UGH CALARTS" strawman than I've seen people complain about the show in that specific way, or insisting all the backlash is only from upset Thundercats superfans

Bullshit.

If CalArts is "California Insitute of Arts" the very first comment on this page mentions CalArts. People are making these comments. The blue checkmark guy may be exaggerating, and I don't pretend to understand what it means, but if people are actually saying it, it is not "an elaborately constructed strawman".

Also, I feel like if you're participating in the backlash, that makes you an upset Thundercats superfan by definition. What else is there?

poorwill - 2018-07-08

updating the ticker: 77 comments now, not including my one. i'm so glad the dumb shit i get emotional about is actually brilliant and really deep but you guys just wouldn't understand

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-05-20

There's two billion people on the intenet, and about billion of them are lonely and bored. Nothing ever happens anymore without inspiring some kid of backlash.... and a backlash never occurs without someone mining it for attention, clicks, content filler, or ad revenue.

Spit Spingola - 2018-05-21

People are literally sending death threats to the animators, way to go 40 year old Thundercat fans.

Caminante Nocturno - 2018-06-10

No they're not. Nobody's sending them death threats, they're just lying about that so they can use it to deflect any criticism.
