"Need a spot … spot … spot!"
"Ah, there you are. Heh, heh, heh."

Binro the Heretic - 2018-04-07

Jesus, did that guy die?

simon666 - 2018-04-07

The guy posted the video from the hospital, according to his Instagram account, so he's alive.

yogarfield - 2018-04-07

They're always turning into women and shit. Who needs em?

Anaxagoras - 2018-04-07

The spotter wasn't the problem. He was right there, closely watching like he was supposed to. Spotters are there to help you put the barbell on its stand if your arms are shaking & you can't quite lift it back up. What happened to that guy was much quicker than any spotter is expected to react to. (In fact, I'm betting that the spotter is the only reason the weightlifter didn't die then & there.)

Hazelnut - 2018-04-07

I completely agree about the spotter. But what the hell did happen? At first I thought he must have been using a "suicide grip", but no, his thumbs were around the bar. Did they bend back somehow?

Hooker - 2018-04-07

It's too much fuckin' weight.

kingofthenothing - 2018-04-07

It honestly looks like his hands were just sweaty and it all just slipped.

simon666 - 2018-04-07

It's called a bar roll and looks to my eye, though I probably don't know enough about weight lifting to be authoritative, that it is in fact too much weight. Bar rolls can occur with bad/improper hand grip, where the lifter doesn't properly wrap the thumb around the bar. It also seems like it might have been a max lift, though I wasn't able to verify that anywhere. The roll probably could have been mitigated if the spotter were near the bar during the initial down movement, which, if it was a max or near max lift, would have have been appropriate.

simon666 - 2018-04-07

But as you guys know the title was meant to be humorously apt, not descriptively apt.

Anaxagoras - 2018-04-08

Sorry... I wasn't trying to get on your case Simon. I saw something wrong on the Internets & did the knee-jerk "ACTUALLY...." thing.

TheyUsedDarkForces - 2018-04-10

That's around 500 lbs, and the way he unracks it makes it look like he's capable of actually benching that weight (and that guy is huge). 500 is a huge bench, and nothing about it looks bad until he drops it.

That said, I don't see any chalk on his hands, and it's possible that bar is bent, so I'd say those are both reasons.

He doesn't have a belt, wraps or sleeves on, either, so maybe he's trying to win a bet or something.

garcet71283 - 2018-04-08

No no, he was just trying this.
