Almost 3 hours to evacuate and they still left over 1,500 people aboard.

Jesus fuck.

SolRo - 2018-03-27

Yeah, this was back in the good old days before the bureaucrats with their nanny state safety regulations ruined everything!

Bobonne - 2018-03-29

Steerage passengers were allegedly locked behind gates by the crew and only one steerage room steward actually performed his duty to guide them upward toward evacuation. If the passengers didn't break into 1st and 2nd class areas to get through to a safe route, or be lucky enough to be guided by that one guy, they all died, and given that many of them didn't speak english, they had no idea what was going on until it was far too late, particularly given that the routes from steerage to the boat deck (where the lifeboats were being loaded) was a maze even the crew had been getting lost in on the voyage up to that point.

This is on top of all the well-known facts, like insufficient numbers of lifeboats, lifeboats being sent out 1/3 loaded with rich passengers, and so forth.

It was a tragedy of human errors combined with the worst possible luck on the part of nature. There's a reason it prompted more sweeping changes in regulation and societal behavior than any other sinking in human history (no rules-lawyering about sinkings that prompted declarations of war allowed here).

The framing and the way they dole out the information built great suspense, even if you hazily remember the Nova episode from when you were a kid, etc. I expected less and ended up staring at this the whole way through.

A great cinematicization of a bunch of data. Cinematization. One of those, or something like them, needs to be coined, I think. Your data been cinemized.

The Mothership - 2018-03-28

For anybody wanting a dated and romanticized, yet still terrifying, account of this story read and/or watch A Night to Remember.

yogarfield - 2018-03-28

Hate to be that guy, but you need to fix your title. The RMS Olympic was the ship that sunk, not the Titanic.

yogarfield - 2018-03-28

I should add that I 100% don't believe this, but there are a bunch of batshit history buffs that subscribe to the swap theory. I'm actually surprised there aren't Titanic deniers at this point.

Raggamuffin - 2018-03-28

What is even the point of that? The conspiracy theory is that actually a different but essentially identical ship in all but name is the one that sunk?

exy - 2018-03-28

The Woke-Off

yogarfield - 2018-03-28

Long story short the Olympic had collided with a British Warship, was extensively damaged, and found to be at fault for the incident and so their insurance was voided. Some old-timey beards were stroked, the nameplates were changed and some carpet was added. Bingo-bongo, the "Titanic" was sunk and they got their payout.

It's all bullshit, but that's what people like to do. The Olympic went on to serve as a troop carrier in WWI.

It even got a dazzle makeover, which is seriously awesome if you aren't familiar with the practice. Link: http://www.the vintagenews.com/2016/02/02/51089/

Great link yogar!

garcet71283 - 2018-03-29

Titanic never sank. It sailed off the edge of the flat earth and into the firmament.

yogarfield - 2018-03-29

Garcet what the fuck is wrong with you? The unwashed masses can't handle the truth.

Quad9Damage - 2018-03-28

"NOTICE: Comments about conspiracy theories such as the switch theory, the coal fire theory, or any stories of Titanic being sunk deliberately or through criminal negligence will be deleted. These theories have been debunked and proven wrong many times. Our video is intended to educate, and we will not tolerate the spread of misinformation on our page."

Everyone knows Plinkett did it. Come on.

Binro the Heretic - 2018-03-28

Oh, for fuck's sake. There really are Titanic conspiracy theorists? What the actual Hell?

Cena_mark - 2018-03-28

"ICE CAN'T BREAK STEEL!'

Binro the Heretic - 2018-03-29

It pisses me off because all conspiracy theorists eventually link their obsession to the fate of the world in the weirdest possible way.

This can't simply be a failure of engineering & training that led to the loss of over 1,500 lives. No, that would be too simple. It had to be a huge convoluted plot orchestrated by a shadow government as part of a centuries-long three-dimensional chess game to take over the world & sell all of humanity to the reptilians that live inside the hollow Earth.

garcet71283 - 2018-03-29

Meanwhile Mulder is locked in a room with all the proof and Scully is outside when all the crazy shit happens.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2018-03-28

I wonder how accurate this is.. They dont say how it was compiled. Eg. Was it all accurately physically simulated, including the structure?
If it *is* accurate, then how quickly it finally sinks at the end is quite freaky.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-03-28

I think we can assume that there's a protocol for when a commercial liner sinks, and that protocol includes recording the timeline of the event, to aid in insurance claims, and any subsequent investigation.

SolRo - 2018-03-28

it sinks so quickly at the end partially because the front half was still attached and pulling it down. Also because it was ripped in half...

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-03-28

>>>If it *is* accurate, then how quickly it finally sinks at the end is quite freaky.

It's not so freaky. At 2:39, the ship breaks in half. Needless to say, it started taking on water a whole lot faster at that point.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-03-28

I thought this was a dupe, but this is actually a different -- and incidentally, much better -- version of the same basic premise that I submitted a while back.
