Maybe a little over a year back when I started use phone based ride services, I asked every driver how they liked their gig.

One guy that had a back problem and couldn't do another job explained it like so:

Yes the pay sucks, and you really need to be efficient to be able to pay off the vehicle/maintenance; but it's a lot better than working at some shit place doing shit work with a shit boss who can make your life hell.

My survey of uber drives had the same results. Most said the pay sucks. One also mentioned that they turn their phones off somewhat simultaneously around peak hours to price gouge.
