I don't know who this Establishment tool is, but apparently he doesn't understand the power of sitting out elections.

He doesn't get young people at all either. Young people won't wait in line to vote, but they will wait in line for hours for Rick and Morty Happy Meal prizes. Therefore, the correct answer is to give away Rick and Morty toys when people vote.

The Rick and Morty toy idea would totally work. You may need a Bojack Horseman toy as well to pick up the more partisan, but still negotiating with alcoholism for a ride to the polls, voters.

Just keep in mind that shouting "I'm Pickle Rick" or "Duckman was better" counts as electioneering.

At this point, Frank was the Libertarian candidate.

???

"I was contacted by the Libertarian Party. They came here, and they wanted me to run for president on their ticket. And, I said, "Well, show me what your platform is ... And if I like it, I'll consider it." This guy flew here from Norman, Oklahoma, and we had, like, a 5 hour meeting right here in this room. That was about 3 months ago, just before their convention. And, I went thru their platform, and I studied it, and I looked at it, and some of the stuff I liked, and some of it I didn't. And I said, "I can't really stand up and support your platform wholeheartedly because some the stuff you have in here is either wrong or stupid. And, in order for me to be a candidate for your party, would they, in fact, nominate me if I couldn't be an ideologue and go the whole 9 yards." And, he said it was doubtful they would support you at the convention if you didn't just spew the whole thing. And I said; "Well, I'm not your bot. Thanks a lot. Goodbye."

tl/dr Frank Zappa was about as NOT the Libertarian candidate as a person can possibly be -- they courted him and he flat-out refused. That's a much firmer rejection of Libertarian candidateship than most of us claim.

There's stuff you heard and have absorbed because you assumed it was true, and then there's stuff you've actually fact-checked. That extra step is entirely worth it.

Old_Zircon - 2017-10-13

He wasn't a formal Libertarian, he was a self described "Practical Conservative."

But yeah, I was misremembering that specific quote and thought he allied himself with them for the campaign cycle despite his misgivings.

Bort - 2017-10-14

Fair enough. Personally, I've adopted an "are you sure?" doublecheck step before posting anything that I think is right but can't really back up. It's better than unintentionally propagating falsehoods -- doesn't much hurt where Frank Zappa trivia is concerned, but it does impact elections.

chumbucket - 2017-10-13

I can tell he absolutely loves to do these.

Old_Zircon - 2017-10-13

This is more likely 1984, since that was election year.

Old_Zircon - 2017-10-14

Yeah, 88 election. I was like 7, it's hard to keep track.

Bort - 2017-10-14

There was a time when we expected people -- even young people -- to vote in EVERY election, not just the presidential ones. While voter turnout levels never reached particularly high levels, we at least used to consider it a personal failing of non-voters for not doing their job.

So no, I don't think it was unlikely that Frank Zappa would try to get people to cast their first vote in 1985.

Meerkat - 2017-10-13

That is one Dappa Zappa.

The Mothership - 2020-11-08

Frank Zappa.
