Lets hope she's better than Captain Catherine Janeway.

cognitivedissonance - 2017-07-16

I'm more concerned about how they'll dance around the Master's coded homosexuality.

poorwill - 2017-07-17

Isn't the Master a woman now too?

Bort - 2017-07-17

Missy (a.k.a. the Mistress) recently died, allegedly, so it's not clear what the Master is. I say it was a particularly easy death for a Time Lord to beat, especially this one, so I don't even take it on faith that the Master will have to return in a different regeneration.

I hope we get more of Missy as played by Michelle Gomez. The Master has almost always been a dud as a villain, but as a far less morally-centered ally to the Doctor, Missy was a more useful character.

discodracula - 2017-07-17

The Master has "permanently dead" several times before and always came back, so don't count on this one being final.

Bort - 2017-07-17

And this time, all Missy has to do is possess some sort of defense against a weapon she'd built long long ago, to protect against an attack she possibly even remembers doing.

Future Breitbart Headline: Why DoctorGate is really about ethics of male oppression

Xenocide - 2017-07-16

Yours.

Bort - 2017-07-16

I'm calling it, people online are going to start saying, "how can the Doctor escape from Daleks when they can just follow the trail of blood?"

BHWW - 2017-07-16

Alternately, next will come a wave of clickbait and thinkpieces that take handfuls of random negative Tweets from anonymous assholes with 5 followers or negative FB comments to use as evidence of a "wide-ranging misogynistic backlash".

At least one of the show's creators and or someone at the BBC will come out in support of the show's new star after the "horrible overwhelming negative response" online.

Then online media will feature stories attempting to shame people who argue that while there was something of a "backlash" it's been blown far out of proportion by the clickbaiting media, molehill into a mountain, etc. and more or less accuse these people of being just like RagingWhovianFuckwad56445 who said that this new actress in the role is dumb and ugly and should be fired...from a cannon!

blue vein steel - 2017-07-16

i dont know man, Breitbart is a pretty mainstream source at this point, and if they were to begin pontificating on it, it wouldn't be regarded as fringe anymore.

Kilo147 - 2017-07-16

Fuck. Yes.

Bort - 2017-07-16

When Tom Baker's run was coming to an end, he and the producer decided to have fun with the media: Tom offered his best wishes to his successor, "whoever he, or she, may be".

I am wondering why there is so much crossover between "Broadchurch" and "Doctor Who". David Tennant and Arthur Darvill made it big on DW first, and even Olivia Colman was on DW (Matt Smith's first episode; she even shared scenes with Arthur). Oh, and David Bradley was the disgraced newspaper vendor in the first season of "Broadchurch", if memory serves.

Space Odin - 2017-07-16

Because there are only 500 actors in the U.K. and all of them have been on fucking Dr Who, Harry Potter, Peep Show, and Game of Thrones.

Oscar Wildcat - 2017-07-16

We have something similar in America, where despite a population of >300 million people, we have only _one_ documentary film maker. His name is Ken Burns. Have you heard of him?

Old_Zircon - 2017-07-16

I really don't care about Dr. Who, I'm just an all around Tom Baker fan and this only makes me more of one.

Maggot Brain - 2017-07-16

Dr Boob

Binro the Heretic - 2017-07-16

Really, it should have been done ages ago.

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2017-07-16

I don't think Doctor Who changing showrunners was as big an event with the original series as it is now. I'm sure if Chibnall has a mediocre-to-bad season with Whittaker, the vocal part of the fanbase is going to scream "JESUS CHRIST BRING STEVEN MOFFAT BACK!" just as quickly as it wanted him out.

Whatever shows Chibnall worked on doesn't matter now. He's in the Whovian meat-grinder. One never walks out with the same level of sanity one has walking in.

Two Jar Slave - 2017-07-16

People still watch this trash?

Old_Zircon - 2017-07-16

That depends on how you define "person."

tesla_weapon - 2017-07-16

Being a self-professed sci fi and fantasy nerd I thought I would go back and watch all the new Dr Who episodes and I couldn't even make it through a single episode, I checked some other episodes and it was just as shit, and I will watch a lot of pointless shit, but not this.

Meerkat - 2017-07-16

I made it through almost 3 or 4. I should really get back to watching them I guess, but I keep watching eSports and Soccer and playing Rocksmith instead.

poorwill - 2017-07-17

I've never seen the quality of a piece of media vary so wildly. When it's good, it's good - when it's bad it's truly unbearable.

chumbucket - 2017-07-17

I made an attempt to watch Eddleston Dr. Who and it seemed like it was going to be OK until after one full episode I was done with suffering through Billie Piper's un-hearable cockney dialogue as Rose.

StanleyPain - 2017-07-16

Man, they could cast fucking Helen Mirren and it wouldn't change what a total shit show Dr. Who has become. It's a lost cause at this point...garbage written by garbage people. Not even really much of a sci-fi show anymore. Sci-fi in the same way that..uh...Supernatural is or something.

Old_Zircon - 2017-07-16

I mean, to be fair, Supernatural is hilarious.

Ninehells - 2017-07-16

Let's be honest, it was always campy as hell. It's just now that they are big business, they are too serious to play and experiment and screw up. Sometimes that get it really right, but most of the time it seems they aren't willing to risk getting it really wrong.

BHWW - 2017-07-16

It's campy as ever, just really strained and overdone and trying to appeal to the sort of people who think using phrases like "timey-wimey" constantly in real life never becomes tiresome and the spotlight is shone brightly and for too long on the most obnoxious characters. I barely watched this recent era with Capaldi and what I saw was eye-rolling.

StanleyPain - 2017-07-16

The last episode of the show I watched was literally unrecognizable as Dr. Who. It was some domestic drama shit with all sorts of romance crap and the extremely minor sci-fi aspect wasn't even introduced until the 3rd act, and even then it was just handwaved away. It was literally like an episode of a British drama with the casual mention of aliens or something.

BHWW - 2017-07-16

The Doctor being sexualized was the cut-off point for me. Classic DW was avuncular; romantic involvement with companions was sort of 'off' and a touch creepy. Leave that crud to the fanfictioneers.

garcet71283 - 2017-07-16

Supernatural is the best show on TV and 13 years and still strong proves it.
I'm a hundred percent serious, I have never watched a show remain that strong for so long. It actually got better after the typical fourth season drop off and the writers abandoned the main plot for whatever athe fuck they want to do season to season.

Nominal - 2017-07-16

"Super Who-lock" is the name of the particular tumblr "fan fiction cart before the horse" phenomenon you're looking for.

Bort - 2017-07-16

The show runs 80% on the appeal of Castiel. "Hey, ass-butt!" remains the smack-talkiest of smack talk. (That 80% used to be split with Bobby.)

The remaining 20% appeal is about 30% Sam and -10% Dean. Frau Bort watches "Supernatural" and I spend most of my time yelling at Dean.

StanleyPain - 2017-07-16

To each his own I guess but Supernatural is basically shit for mommies who write twilight fan fic.

Oscar Wildcat - 2017-07-16

Issue of nomenclature: is Dr. Who still to be referred to as a Time Lord, or is she now a Time Lady? Or do we need a new gender neutral title, like Time Administrators?

blue vein steel - 2017-07-16

is "Lord" in this syntax gendered?

Oscar Wildcat - 2017-07-16

As an appellation, I would argue so. Under what circumstances is it not?

Maggot Brain - 2017-07-16

Tempus reginae?

Bort - 2017-07-16

The word "lord" comes from an Anglo-Saxon word "hlāford" meaning "loaf-keeper". Lady comes from an Anglo-Saxon word "hlǣfdīge" meaning "loaf-kneader". Decide what the loaf is in this case and you'll have your answer.

And you were a servant you would be known as a "hlāf-ǣta" meaning "loaf-eater".

StanleyPain - 2017-07-16

Now she's a TIME QUEEN YAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

cognitivedissonance - 2017-07-16

Tempus dominae. Reginae would imply blood monarchy.

Sludge Vohaul - 2022-07-16

Stars to this comment thread.

mouser - 2017-07-16

But she fuckin had to be white. When are we going to get a trans-gender lesbienne arabic-black muslim time refugee with a failed breast implant iraq war amputee role model?

blue vein steel - 2017-07-16

you're very specific about what you want the shapeshifting alien to be

StanleyPain - 2017-07-17

Why does Doctor Who even have to be a physical entity? What kind of abelist bullshit is this? Why can't s/he be an energy vapor?

Xenocide - 2017-07-17

Congrats to Mouser on being the 100,000,000th person to make that joke on the internet since yesterday.

Bort - 2017-07-17

I'm not sure what happens when the MRA types realize the Doctor is finally someone they consider "bangable".

Mister Yuck - 2017-07-17

The joke is obvious I guess, but I heard basically the same sentiment, minus the hyperbole, on NPR on the way home today. People who care a bunch about diversity in pop need to learn when to take a win.

Nominal - 2017-07-17

A father and a son are in a car crash that kills the father. The son is whisked to the emergency room in critical condition and "The Doctor" says, "I cannot operate on this patient. He's my son."

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE??????

Bort - 2017-07-17

The boy was adopted by a gay couple.

Two Jar Slave - 2017-07-17

The father was only killed for a moment before regenerating into a younger, hotter, less-expensive actor.

Bort - 2017-07-17

The riddle, as stated, says that there is a father and a son, not that they are each other's father and son. The doctor is the dad of the son in the car. The dead father in the car left an unspecified orphan, possibly even the doctor.

Two Jar Slave - 2017-07-17

The Father and Son are metaphorical divisions of the Holy Trinity. The Doctor cannot operate on God, and God cannot require healing.

God driving a car was also a metaphor.

Oscar Wildcat - 2017-07-17

...and therefore, the Father in this case was a catholic priest, and the doctors son was being molested by him, the resulting orgasmic distraction causing the wreck. QED.

Bort - 2017-07-19

The father was the sixth of the Five Chinese Brothers (born after the book was published); he was immune to car crashes and the book royalties allowed him to become a doctor.

betamaxed - 2017-07-17

They should have just hired a poc actress with really big knockers so everyone gets what they want. This is a tactic any entertainment property should use whenever questions about diversity in casting come up.

The uber progressives get a poc woman in a lead role while the basement dwelling chuds get something to slobber over. The only losers in this equation are white racists which is as it should be.
