No!! Not Lumpy!!!!

Binro the Heretic - 2017-06-21

Fuck the coal miners. I didn't see them coming to save my job when the engineering & design company I worked for went under because advances in CADD allowed big firms like Brown & Root to undercut smaller independent firms.

I don't see them giving a fuck about how my hours have been cut and my wages are stagnant because retail is slowly dying out.

I'm supposed to not care that coal-based power is fucking the environment just because they don't want to leave the middle of fucking nowhere and learn to do something other than dig fucking coal?

What makes their job so fucking special that we have to put renewable energy, which would employ far more people, on hold just to make sure they can dig up flammable rocks?

Fuck you, hillbillies.

Monkey Napoleon - 2017-06-21

Coasties are fucking trash.

alitheiathricechastened - 2017-06-21

While that may be true, you must also consider the counter-argument: Fuck you, hillbillies.

Xenocide - 2017-06-21

Most miners are desperately poor people born into a cycle of poverty and uneducation, which might give you a clue as to why they don't all just pack up for the big city and get exciting new careers in robot programming.

And despite the prevailing media narrative, the average Trump voter was an upper-class white suburban shithead, so you can't blame miners for the idiot's victory, either.

So why are they politically important? Because coal mining is seen as a tough, manly job which people can easily understand and which they connect to old-school ideals about the protestant work ethic. The votes of coal miners aren't worth that much (especially since most of them live in red states that Trump was going to win anyway) but the image of Trump being cheered by miners is worth a lot to voters elsewhere. The fact that their jobs are basically obsolete and belong to a bygone era is actually a plus when you look at the base Trump was cultivating: "I'm going to bring back coal jobs" is a bullshit claim but it goes hand in hand with "I'm going to take us back to a time when America was white, I mean great."

That's not to say that a lot of miners aren't racist shitheels who would have jumped onboard the MAGA train even if Trump had never given them the time of day, but a lot of these folks just want to know that they're not going to starve to death, and only one candidate bothered to tell them he would help.

It'll only be later that they'll discover that he was full of shit, that most of their jobs are doomed and they were nothing but campaign props to him.

Old_Zircon - 2017-06-21

Xenocide is 100% right.

That said, the Protestant work ethic can't fuck off from our culture soon enough.

"Working for a living" shouldn't be a badge of honor. A living should be a basic right not something you have to work for.

Give the coal miners IPads.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-06-22

>>>I'm supposed to not care that coal-based power is fucking the environment just because they don't want to leave the middle of fucking nowhere and learn to do something other than dig fucking coal?

No, you're supposed to piss up a rope, you tree-hugging piece of shit.

#MAGA

The point is, they're being lied to. For the most part, their jobs are already toast. And yes, there's a bit of complicity for believing the fairy tales about "Clean Coal", and for believing ANYTHING that lying bastard Sean Hannity has to say.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2017-06-22

>>>"Working for a living" shouldn't be a badge of honor. A living should be a basic right not something you have to work for.

I think both things should be true.

Hooker - 2017-06-22

Oh, Binro.

Nominal - 2017-07-20

He wants to believe he's a good person so very badly.

Old_Zircon - 2017-06-21

Everything Trump knows about coal mining he learned on the set of Zoolander.

blue vein steel - 2017-06-21

that is 100% accurate

Xenocide - 2017-06-21

Trump didn't even know poor people existed until last year. When he went to his first mining town, he spent an hour throwing up in the bathroom after being told he had just touched a person who has never owned a helicopter.
