This might be less heterosexual than I was initially led to believe by the tag.

betamaxed - 2017-06-17

clicking on that tag will make all your dreams come true

Old_Zircon - 2017-06-17

It could possibly use the "not gay" tag too. And I think there's a "totally not gay" tag as well, that might be appropriate.

Old_Zircon - 2017-06-17

I posted this in the Google group a week ago, one star.

So I first heard of Billy Badd (aka Motorpsycho) back in the late 90s when I found a promo tape for it that just had the trailer (but with a full, awesome, promo only cover). One of the best exploitation trailers I've ever seen, especially the voiceover work, and of course the tape got lost in a rough move around 2009 and nobody has ever uploaded the trailer to Youtube. Just kills me.

And yes I will give credit and say I'm aware of this because of you. Meanwhile this is the straw that broke the camel's back towards me buying VHS capture equipment because nowhere can I find this movie available on dvd.

Meanwhile I'm on the hunt for a VCR that can do Time Based Correction (TBC) that won't cost me an arm and a leg.

Old_Zircon - 2017-06-17

I was joking about the credit part (the whole "angry statement, 1 star!!" comment with a 5 star post is one of my standard moves). If you can capture it that will be amazing because I think I did finally find a torrent of it a few months ago but if I did it was poor quality. Learn from my mistake - I got some pretty high end standard definition capture hardware a few years ago because SD is, on paper, plenty to capture VHS and now that everything has gone HD you can get really nice SD equipment for literally pennies on the dollar. But it turns out that for VHS, uncompressed, better-than-broadcast-standard 10 bit capture with high end hardware timebase correction and color/level optimization at 480p looks nowhere near as good as the results you could get from a halfway decent 720p capture device you can get new on Amazon for like $100. I think we've already had a conversation about that at least once before but seriously, capture at a higher resolution than your source material, it makes a massive difference! Especially for something as culturally important as Billy Badd.

And then upload a copy ASAP please!

Old_Zircon - 2017-06-17

Oh, you don't need a VCR that does timebase correction, you can get a really high end standalone Timebase corrector for like $40-$60 on eBay (maybe mor elike $80 if you don't want to wait for a deal), they're easy to find. I reccommend "For.A" brand, although it looks like there aren't many on eBay right now (a few weeks ago there were dozens in the $50-$80 range). ut there are a lot of perfectly good rackmount timebase correctors out there for short money if you don't need modern broadcast features (and for VHS capture you don't).

These look like all you'd ever need and more, for example:

I can't see if they have composite in on that particular one but it has S-video so you could still use a lot of the better consumer VCRs with that, and one of those BNC connectors to the right of the S-video input is probably composite.

Old_Zircon - 2017-06-17

Also, any video switcher with genlock (which means almost anything made in the 90s) will do timebase correction too, and unless you get one of the cult panasonics that VJs love you might be able to do even better than getting a standalone TBC, plus you'll get all the shitty Tim and Eric style video effects. Only downside is they're bulky.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've opened up a thread on the group so we can discuss this in further detail.

Old_Zircon - 2017-06-18

I saw that before I saw this, and just posted a huge wall of text.

Old_Zircon - 2017-06-18

Bear in mind I'm far from an expert, I just have too much free time and no qualms about having a living room that looks like the back room of a pawn shop.

betamaxed - 2017-06-18

As word got out in my peer group that I was on the hunt for ways to digitize vhs content I've gotten a lot of requests from folks to transfer some of their old tapes. Specifically just things they taped off of T.V. back in the day that they could probably get on digital but want specifically the commercials that were on the tape.

I figure if I can't get a house (it's seattle area so that's just not happening) and kids aren't really in the picture I might as well start stocking up on esoteric A/V equipment.

He did this during the ACA town halls when the Tea Party shit heads were railing against govnmemt in their Medicare.

M-DEEM - 2017-06-18

That's pretty great but my favorite part is the bike shifting itself
