Old_Zircon - 2017-05-22 When I was a kid (same road trip when I was near the herd of sea lions I mentioned below, in fact) we also saw a wild grizzly by the road in broad daylight, and there were about 20 cars parked with their passengers out milling around maybe a dozen yards from the thing (including me and my dad - my mom had encountered more than enough bears in her life already and stayed in the van) like it was no big deal.
Point being, I have no confidence that treating sea lions like water grizzlies would make people act any less stupid around them.

infinite zest - 2017-05-22 There was this beach I used to go to a lot with my family when I was a kid and there were usually at least 2 sea lions chilling right on the beach at any given time. There was a little sign when you approached the beach about not disturbing them, just like the shark sign you usually see. And even though I was as curious as any other kid you didn't do it, not because you'd get in trouble, but because of that sign that said these cute little napping sea puppies can easily drag me and 4 other kids underwater, problably at the same time. Do not disturb doesn't just mean "don't feed" either ya know..

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-22 I was about 15 feet from a pack of around two dozen of them once as a kid, on a beach on the Oregon coast (maybe it was the same one) and yeah, they are not the kind of thing you take lightly, even in grade school.

Oscar Wildcat - 2017-05-22 I was thinking dog too, until it sized her up and put the bite on her. That's pure cat, right there. I've got to admit, I laughed. That little girl was dangling in front of him like a fishing lure. You can tell he's used to a handout, and the tourists are baiting him but not delivering. He gets frustrated and then we see this.

Maggot Brain - 2017-05-22 We have the same issue here in San Diego. There is colony of about thirty Sea Lions in La Jolla with sings posted everywhere that say "do not approach!" with the area sectioned off with rope. At lest twice each summer someone gets bit by one of them while doing something stupid like and like clock work a citizens committee forms demanding the removal of the sea lions.

Oscar Wildcat - 2017-05-22 Good luck getting rid of them once established. I've seen some crazy things, including a robot orca, and they just shrug it off. Few have the stomach for what would be necessary. Which is a good thing I think, we are improving.

Maggot Brain - 2017-05-22 The real funny thing about the Sea Lions in La Jolla this that they picked the one ugly beach in San Diego and the only reason why people go there is to check out the sea lions.

Not too far from where I live there's this wharf. Super touristy, floating homes and businesses but they do a badass beef brisket so I like to go from time to time.
Never fails to see some dumbfuck tourist feeding these things (despite the signs saying not to in four different languages, including unmistakable imagery) and a million people crowding it and taunting it to take their photos. There's no sense of being reasonable with them. It's easy to get pictures of them without disturbing the animals.
The worst animals in this video are the humans.

Things I've seen people from China do:
- try to pet a skunk
- try to pet raccoons
- walk on thin cracked ice so their friends can take a picture of them
- go fishing with their five year old on the edge of a rock 15 feet above water
- ask me or my co-workers to park their car (4x in 3 months) because they can't park in tight spots
- push their grandma in a wheelchair under caution tape into a work zone
- push a baby carriage under caution tape and directly under a guy putting up conduit
There seems to be a general disregard for safety and a lack of awareness of surroundings.

Forgive me for asking, but in the interests of clarity, do we know for certain that this was actually a sea lion and not, for example, a misidentified seal?
Also, has anyone ruled out the possibility that this was a digitally edited video? It's increasingly unwise to take videos at face value.
Finally, how do we know that the girl didn't want to be pulled into the water? It was clearly a warm day outside, and who doesn't like to cool off on hot days? The girl didn't actually scream for help, so how do we know that the alleged animal (which may or may not have even been a sea lion) was not acting in accordance with her wishes?
I ask these questions only to make certain that our facts are in order before we draw any unsubstantiated conclusions.
