To be fair, a car is like a siphon straight from your wallet into the sewer so he just won 10,000 pounds plus a 300-500 pound per month expense he didn't ask for, between fuel and insurance. But a guess you could sell it.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-19

Plus it's not even a good car, Range Rovers are unreliable, unsafe, ugly, garbage cars.

jfcaron_ca - 2017-05-19

Couldn't you sell it right away and at least recoup the tax burden? Or accept the cash & decline the car? Maybe they have contracts saying that you can't sell, but why?

blue vein steel - 2017-05-19

i bet its a lease I heard that's what the award cars on Price is Right end up being.

blue vein steel - 2017-05-19

and OZ is right. Range Rovers are trash and only a fool would buy one.

I remember back in the 80s when I was little we went out to San Diego to visit my dad's research partner and his wife. They had bought a brand new Range Rover that morning and picked us up at the airport in it, from where we headed straight to a good Mexican place for dinner. When we got there, the Range Rover blew a fuse as soon as they tried to roll up the power windows. The windows and doors were permanently stuck open, the RR didn't come with any spare fuses and used a (then) hard to find type, and you couldn't really leave a brand new range rover parked in the middle of the city with all of the windows open and doors unlocked. I think we ended up having to wait over an hour while he took a cab around town looking for a garage that was open and had a replacement fuse.

A few years later he was out in the field and the Range Rover rolled going around a turn because they are top heavy even for an SUV. It was a fluke that he wasn't killed or injured, because the frame was completely substandard and crumpled. He told us when he stopped rolling, a piece of it had actually snapped and created a foot long metal spike that was pointing right at his head and had only missed killing him by 3 or 4 inches.

Nothing I've heard about Range Rovers since then has suggested that was anything out of the ordinary as far as their design and construction, although most people are lucky enough to never roll one.

Also, is this contest specifically giving stuff away to car dealers, or is it just a coincidence that this guy works at a dealership? I don't care enough to google it.

Either way, this guy sells cars. He knows.

1:44 - 1:46 is gold.

My dad, and subsequently me, had a 93 Toyota Land cruiser (gas was still cheap and SUVs weren't yet really a thing) which ran for 400,000 miles before i sold it, and could have probably done another 400k. Why anyone would buy an inferior-in-literally-every-way Range Rover over a Land Cruiser is beyond me.

15th - 2017-05-19

My old man used to work with cars, buying, fixing, selling etc. Can confirm Range Rovers are huge pieces of shit.

15th - 2017-05-19

Blue, Toyotas are great. I have pickup pushing 200k and it runs like a top.

This American Life #561 has a great story about Japenese/American car manufacturing, for those of you even mildly into that sort of thing. It details the story of an absolute cluster fuck US car factory that had an exchange program with Toyota. This was in the hay day of Union power so the stories about gross negligence are hilarious.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-19

BVS, in this guy's case I think it's because he had driven Land Rovers in Saudi Arabia a lot when he was over there and was taken in by the word "rover" in the name, but that's really not much of an excuse, it's not like they didn't already have over a decade and a half track record of suckage at that point.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-19

15th I'll try to track that down, that period is intersting. You had the complete mess of overpowered unions on one hand and the labor-crushing hyper-fordist Japanese factory model on the other hand, and both of them were uniquely horrible in their own ways.

15th - I'll also vouch for that episode of TAL, it's one of the best ones. I went inside the NUMMI plant a few times for work, right after Tesla moved in and was getting set up, and it's a pretty neat place. I'm sure it's different now, but at the time it was a mixture of brand new high-tech equipment of all sorts surrounded by untouched, semi abandoned warehouse space. I have pictures of a lot of really cool industrial places, but unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to take any inside NUMMI.

Also, as many above have noted, the smart money has not traditionally been on any out-of-warranty Range Rover. That said, the luxury SUV craze has allowed them the money to make some improvements and I know in the last few years, they've kinda managed to claw their way towards a reputation for halfway decent resale value. At least relative to what it was.

I'll also say that those newer Range Rovers are more capable off-road than you'd ever imagine by looking at them (and those super tame tires), but even with all that, it's still a dorky, overpriced SUV for people that should probably be driving station wagons. Gotta go older Land Cruiser every time, even though it's kind of an apples and oranges situation. The new Range Rovers are like being in a new Mercedes and they share a similar social status, so that'll always win for most people. Maybe this guy just isn't excited because they gave him the mid-tier one and his neighbor drives the one that starts at $85,000.

I miss the ubiquity of the station wagon, these newfangled, super-expensive SUVs need to get off my lawn already.

Would have been happier with a meat pie.

Ugh - 2017-05-21

it's like he watched a bunch of antiques roadshows to get amped up

fedex - 2017-05-19

Probably got stolen that night

Seven Arts/H8 Red - 2017-05-19

I don't know why people are surprised by Dominic's reaction. A strange man tracked Dominic down and sent a Rover after him. What do you THINK the ensuing reaction's going to be?

infinite zest - 2017-05-19

plus you're at work. And you are probably working on someone's car. "OMG A NEW CAR AND 100000 DOLLARS ASLKFJasadcn;'!! oh hi, you had the red jetta? Looks like parts and labor's gonna be at least 5000..
