I couldn't get offended by DNF since the game was so awful that my apathy overpowered my ability to feel anything else.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-08

Same here. Also it came out at the tail end of the shitty parody movie boom when every summer there were a couple of Wayans Brothers and National Lampoon movies and scores of direct to Redbox trash that wasn't even up to that standard, and DNF really fit right in with that stuff.

Duke Nukem is a franchise that shares a lot in common with Deadpool: It survived the 90's on pure nostalgia for when you were 12 and thought it was cool.

In retrospect, it was always mediocre at best.

"Oh dude this guy in this video game said 'shit' and talked about boobies! Radical!"

Monkey Napoleon - 2017-05-08

I'm sorry...

Duke Nukem is a fwanchise that shawes a wot in common wiv Deadpoo. It suwlvived the 90's on pew nostawlgia foh when u wewe twewve and fought it was cew.

Yeah besides the tits and the swearing the game was no Doom, but the Build3D engine was a lot more accessible and just plain better than what a casual modder could do with a Doom wad. If I recall it was almost as flexible as Source would go on to become, as you could add in earthquakes, antigrav rooms and a lot more. But the TNA thing wore off and while I might've stuck with the series if they'd released a DN3D sequel instead of a PSX Tom Raider game a few years later, Half Life was out.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-08

I beat the original Duke Nukum shareware and I remember it being pretty good for a PC sidescroller of the time. Scrolling was smooth, graphics were OK, gameplay was pretty easy but fun and had some variety considering.

It was no Commander Keen, though.

infinite zest - 2017-05-08

Yeah I liked Duke more than Keen initially because I think Duke had blood and Keen didn't, but Duke's story was just plain funny, and showed Duke as much more the egotistical jock that you kind of hate but love even more, like a Zap Brannigan who watched too much Spike TV, or a bulked up Leisure Suit Larry with guns. And really DN3D had nothing you couldn't see in a PG13 rated movie (except maybe the blood) or Doom (the blood) so the TNA was peripheral, a symptom of the character. If times were different and nudity was more accepted in games then like it is now and such, I would've thought of it the way I think of gimmicky VIOLENCE/NUDITY games like Bulletstorm and DNForever (though in fairness I've never bothered to touch Forever) but Duke had a voice, and for the 12-year-old me who sucked at most sports and never went on dates that voice made it OK to objectify women and blow shit up mindlessly, however briefly.

hammsangwich - 2017-05-09

Wrong. Duke 3D was a major step up technologically from Doom. It had real vertical movement which Doom just faked, higher res textures and more colors. Of course it only last about 6 months until Quake came out.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-05-09

@hammsangwich

Eh, whats the difference between "real" and "fake" vertical movement?
In a computer game everything is fake!
All the world geometry in Duke is still 2.5D. 2D polygons with floor and ceiling height information.
Do you mean that in Duke entities like monsters had a top and bottom and in Doom they were essentially infinitely tall columns? Thats a fairly trivial thing to implement if you had more time to mess around with the engine before shipping a game.

at this very moment demoniusx is emitting a high pitched scream of pain

infinite zest - 2017-05-08

Hm.. I always thought Duke's voice was the voice of Tim Kitzrow, who is also known as the NBA Jam announcer and the detective in WhoDunnit pinball. I don't know why I thought that, but there you go.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2017-05-08

I watched all this.. + His 3 or more hours of videos on Molyneux.
As a game dev though I think its really worth it. Generally there is only information being propogated about successful people and projects, so everyone (in every industry) has a massive survivorship bias.
When theres something about a giant failure, its definitely worth the time to watch it.

Ugh.
