The Republicans made dozens of attempts to repeal Obamacare through 2016, but everyone yawned. They make two attempts to repeal it in 2017 and it's front-page news. Is there some reason people are taking the threat more seriously this year than they did last year -- some reason that they could have very easily forestalled back in November, perhaps?

The bus went over the cliff in November 2016, but it's still a long way down to the bottom. Regrets don't change that, but perhaps people could learn the importance of keeping Republicans out of power, once and for all?

Binro the Heretic - 2017-05-07

It's almost like people are worried because the GOP have already demonstrated they can push something horrible through even without popular support.

Bort - 2017-05-07

All Republicans have to do is periodically demonstrate that they are the party of white people (especially straight white Christian men) and all is forgiven on Election Day. So they can repeal Obamacare and their fans will be angry, but all they have to do is reaffirm their hostility to blacks, Mexicans, Muslims, and the LGBT community, and they'll stay in office.

The Democrats, unfortunately, are counting on people who think that participating in an imperfect system or backing an imperfect candidate is a betrayal of their principles. Or at least that describes the Leftier side of the Democratic base.

endlesschris - 2017-05-08

It sure helps when the liberal party attacks fundamental American virtues like free speech, makes clear their intense focus on issues of race / gender rather than the core issue of income inequality, and resorts to petty name calling whenever someone fails to toe the party line.

So, both parties suck.

Bort - 2017-05-08

"makes clear their intense focus on issues of race / gender rather than the core issue of income inequality"

Right, because the Democrats' perennial efforts to raise taxes on the wealthy, increase wages, and expend the social safety net have absolutely nothing to do with addressing income inequality.

Still, you have a point: those uppity BLM protesters should just take their bullets like good negroes while we tend to the issues that really matter, amirite?

Nominal - 2017-05-08

maaaaaayun!

cognitivedissonance - 2017-05-07

Let them eat The Secret.

Binro the Heretic - 2017-05-07

This is the pattern you see with all politicians lately. They say stupid shit to people who will absolutely & utterly agree with them no matter what to support the team.

Then, when politicians are in front of regular people, say stupid shit and get called out on it, they don't know how to handle it.

It's why Trump tried to literally hide behind his desk when confronted by Dickerson. It's why Clinton was dismissive of young women who expressed concerns. It's why so many Representatives flail & sputter at town hall meetings.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-07

Oh wow, with everything that happened since I'd completely forgotten about the whole "young women are only supporting Sanders to meet boys" thing.

Bort - 2017-05-07

It was Gloria Steinem who said girls support Sanders to meet boys.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-07

Oh yeah, I forgot. Should have checked my facts.

So Clinton didn't say that, it was just an approved message delivered by two high profile public figures who were introducing her at a campaign rally.

Bort - 2017-05-07

Okay, well there was the guy at the Bernie rally who called Hillary a "whore", so therefore Bernie called Hillary a "whore". See how this works?

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-08

8====D€===8

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-07

They don't actually believe this.

It's just that they don't give a shit about those people.

jangbones - 2017-05-07

I am going to disagree. I believe that a significant portion of Republican voters and Trump supporters actually think that this bill will bring premiums down, improve health care, and insure more people.

Because they can believe the most outlandish shit directly in the face of continents of evidence.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-07

Oh, I mean the politicians themselves.

kingarthur - 2017-05-07

Five for pure, unadulterated evil. Fuck these people. I hope we put their heads on spikes soon.

Bort - 2017-05-07

Remember the good old days when you Stein supporters rejected arguments like, "if Trump gets into office he'll repeal Obamacare"? Now's a bit late to complain.

Don't worry, things are likely to get even worse as the bus keeps bashing its way down the ravine.

Spaceman Africa - 2017-05-07

its gonna be a decade later and Bort will still be getting mad at this imaginary Jill Stein voter

Bort - 2017-05-07

kingarthur IS a Jill Stein supporter by his own admission.

Feeling butthurt because withholding your vote was / is / ever shall be a dogshit stupid move, huh?

15th - 2017-05-07

Fringe candidates never win, so people should stick to only supporting dynastic shoe-ins. At least that's what I've learned this last election.

Bort - 2017-05-07

Wrong lesson. The correct lesson is, primary your heart out, but in the general election you give your full support to whoever won the primary, and encourage everyone else to.

betabox - 2017-05-07

OK, now learn that it's "shoo-in," not "shoe-in." As in, they'll be shooed in, not that they'll be in shoes. Sheesh!

Nominal - 2017-05-08

It's amazing how Bern victims still speak of the primaries like EVIL ENTRENCHED ELITES swooped in and upended a popular vote landslide for Bernie.

He lost in every possible category: super delegates, delegates, and the popular vote. How exactly was that not following through with popular opinion?

It's hard to walk away from that with any other picture than Bernie Busters think that only what they want matters and the rest of the world can burn if they don't get 100% of it.

15th - 2017-05-08

Beta, that's what I said.

Bort, I hate to bring it up, again, but you refuse to answer a simple question - did a dove land on Sanders' podium?

Raggamuffin - 2017-05-07

I've noticed a much higher rate of guys like this getting called on their shit, not just on the news but in everyday life. Everyone was content to let them live in fantasy land until it turned out that they could do real damage.

Xenocide - 2017-05-07

I think another part of it is just that ever since Reagan the GOP electorate has favored brain-dead rich guys who are good at talking folksy over people who actually know what they're doing. This reached its peak with Trump but they've been stacking the congress with mini-Trumps for decades now.

SolRo - 2017-05-07

Until guys like this face violence for voting on shit that get people killed, then trying to sell it with a barrel full of bullshit, they'll continue doing it - Shit-eating grin and all.

Because the American voter base has an extremely short memory and being a monster doesn't lose elections for these people. Just suck up to a couple corporate interests, get that super PAC money flowing and he'll win again.

StanleyPain - 2017-05-07

For those who don't speak "Retarded Member of the GOP" gibberish, what is meant by this sentiment (and it is echoed by most Republicans) is the child-like belief that everyone in the US can get any sort of healthcare they need if all they do is simply go to a hospital.

Whether they are being willfully dishonest, or they are really that stupid, Republicans keep pushing a weird narrative that no American is ever truly without healthcare when things like 911 exist.

On a side topic, it's worth noting that Trumpcare isn't actually law yet. While everyone should be angry and watchful about what happened in the House, the media seems to forget that it still has to get through the Senate, and reliable political rumor is that basically it's dead on arrival. I'm not saying we're going to get wonderful, sparkling healthcare in the US, but the Trumpcare non-bill of pure garbage that was passed in the House has very little chance of passing the Senate without substantial re-writes and modifications. There's already talk that several major things will probably not even make it into the final bill (the preexisting conditions allowance, etc.)

Nominal - 2017-05-08

Every single news story I've read mentions having to go to the senate.

The excuse I've heard from my conservative relatives is "Anyone can go to the emergency room and they have to treat you!"

Maggot Brain - 2017-05-07

Commentators have been saying that there is going to a big turn over come the midterm election~doubt it :(

Raggamuffin - 2017-05-07

The only political party in the world who could miss a hanging curveball like this is the Democrats.

Nominal - 2017-05-08

Not in the senate. It's 25 Democrats up for reelection and only 8 Republicans. 10 of those Democrats are a thin margin or toss up, while the same is only true for 1 of the Republican seats.

There's a very real chance Republicans actually gain more seats in 2018. God knows what idiot protest votes the BrandNewCongress crowd are going to pull after 2 solid years of Facebook outrage.

*AUDIENCE ROARS WITH LAUGHTER*

Perhaps this man meant nobody dies because they don't have health insurance. At least I really hope that's what he meant, and in all fairness I've never heard of anyone dying because they don't have health insurance. I have, on the other hand, heard of people being driven into an inescapable hole of debt and losing everything they have because they didn't have health insurance.

But either way fuck this guy and everyone like him.

SolRo - 2017-05-07

People die all the time because they don't have health insurance.

Health insurance lets you go see a doctor for $20 to ask about that persistent pain or small weird lump. Without health insurance, people just let things get worse because it's hard to just drop $700+ for a visit and testing when you could just "walk it off" and be a "tough independent American".

I personally know people whose daughter ignored various health problems, probably for years, until she started coughing up blood and went to the emergency room. She died before her parents could make it to the hospital.

Raggamuffin - 2017-05-07

when I was younger I had a kidney stone that had me pissing blood and living in massive pain for about 2 weeks. I had literally no money and didn't go to the doctor because I couldn't take the expense. I had no way of knowing what it was until I finally passed it. If it had turned out to be something serious I probably would have been letting myself die. (yes, I was very stupid. It was soon after I had moved out and was on my own for the first time ever.)

Economically, people waiting around until they are sick enough to go to the emergency room is a big contributor to ballooning healthcare costs in this country. If more people were able to go to the doctor earlier and get preventative care, we might actually be able to start reducing the costs of healthcare. Problem is, a lot of insurance companies have basically just oriented their business toward being scam companies over the years (looking at you, United Health) and they are completely unwilling to actually start acting like actual insurance companies managing shared risk rather then their current model of "you give us money forever, and if you get sick we drop you."

Ninehells - 2017-05-07

Well, if you hadn't popped out of a vagina yet, we would do absolutely everything we could for you. It would be our sacred duty, to save your life. But now that you can breathe and shit, fuck ya, you're on your own.

chumbucket - 2017-05-07

Maybe the power of crystals will make a comeback.

Old_Zircon - 2017-05-08

Oh it's already well underway. For example, there has been an underground network of hippies systematically throwing balls of fimo with quartz stuck in them at cell phone towers to absorb some kind of bad energy something or other for a lot of years now.
